what some may call…

 

hill swept, i pass the gate

after a time-worn ascension

as wind bends the ring of beeches

i can see for miles,

millennia even

 

peopled memories

peep nervous between trunks

and i see them,

and i don’t see them

those,

from long before

 

they lie low

in chambered sleep,

limestone lids

cut with rings

and curious finger holes

the landscape scarred

and altered,

in the almost 5000 years

since the tombs were hushed

 

winter sun cuts the beech,

a rising gale

leans into a howling parting

as i leave, charged

by the wily presence

of what some

may call ghosts

This evokes for me an ancient landscape, where time and history entwine; a powerful poem - a good one.

I did write about it, but not as a poem, and I'm not sure it was posted anywhere. I think it was the only time I've ever seen any kind of ghost. That kind of thing really stays with you!

This is wonderful, you've woven epic natural vistas together with thousands of years of human activity, describing, beautifully, what you see and what you imagine has been.

Thanks everyone - these are lovely comments. This was sketched out whilst there (see the photo) - at Minninglow, Derbyshire. A profound spot, high on the top of a (very windy) hill, a couple of miles from the nearest road. Well worth a ramble.
