“Nick,” I whimpered in to the cell phone that I had glued to my ear. I was pushing my way trough the drunken crowd, until I finally got out of the crowded house and stepped into the cold frosted air, “Nick?” I repeated shrinking against the big Oak tree that sat in the front of Lana’s yard.
“Melanie? What’s wrong? Are you okay?” He asked sounding concerned.
“ Nick I’m-stuck-at-this-party-and-I’m-really-scared-” I knew that sounded like one big run on sentence, I doubt he understood a word I said. My eyes were turning blurry and my face was heating up.
“ Hey Mel, calm down its okay, “ I missed the sound of his voice. “ Slow down and tell me what’s going on.”
Tears were streaming down my face.
“I’m at a friends party and I’m really scared and I didn’t know who else to call can you please come get me.” I exhaled heavily. Then I heard his mom in the background.
“Nick who is it?”
“Its Mel mom,”
“Oh how is Melanie doing?” I loved Nick’s mom, she was the sweetest lady I’ve ever met.
“Not well, mom, can I please borrow the car, I know I’m not allowed to use it, but she’s in trouble.”
“What happened?” She also sounded concerned.
“I don’t know but I need to go mom. Please?”
“Go,” was the last thing she said.
“Mel?” he asked
“Yea?” my voice was very shaky.
“I’m coming, where are you.”
“I’m at a friend o f mines house, but I can meet you at the Starbucks in Upper Beachwood Waterloo.”
“Okay I’m on my way.”
“Thanks so much Nick.” Then I didn’t trust my voice anymore so I slammed my phone shut. Shoved it into my jean pocket and stood up. I turned to look at the party house, the music was still blaring and some people were starting to drift outside also, I guess to cool off a bit. Then I saw one guy turn and throw-up in the flowerpot on the deck. A shiver crept down my spine, and I zipped up my jacket and turned to walk down the road. So much had happened in the last hour then I could handle. The whole scene just kept replaying in my head. Fuck how could I let things get this far.
I felt horrible for calling Nick, especially since he lives all the way on the opposite side of Kitchener and I was in upper Waterloo, and on top of that we hadn’t really spoken since the break-up; but I had no-one else to call or if I did it wouldn’t be someone that I trusted as much as him. I kept trying to think of what I was going to say to him, and before I realized it I was already at the Starbucks.
I decided to just sit on the curb in the dark and wait instead of going inside and having everyone look at me with my eyes red and swollen from crying, and my make-up dripping down my face.
I lost track on how long I was waiting outside, all I knew was that I lost all feeling in my fingers and toes. I was looking down at the pavement trying to hide the tears as best as I could and holding my cut arm close to me.
“So whom should I beat up?” I didn’t need to look up to know who’s comforting voice that was, and I started crying all over again but for a completely different. I finally looked up at him. I opened my mouth to say something, but no words came out. The expression on his face changed completely, from a big mocking smile to a serious face that I had never seen before. He sat down of the curb beside me and put his arm around me, pulling me into him. “ What happened Beautiful?” He asked softly into my ear. He called me beautiful. Oh how much I did miss Nick. I swallowed.
“Well, my parents are out of town for the weekend, and I’m supposed to be staying at my friend Lana’s house, and then she decided to have a party, and so it was fun at first, and I really didn’t have that much to drink, and then I met this guy...” Nick shifted a little. I continued. “We started talking and he got me another drink and I guess he slipped something in it because I was so out of it but it didn’t last very long, because I randomly woke up in Lana’s bed with my top off and this guy on me.” I paused because I was choking on my tears. “ And I pushed him off and he came back onto me and then I slapped him and tried to get up but he pinned me by the wrists, and, and… -he cut my arm” I showed him my left arm that had a huge cut down it. “Then I was able to get out and I called you.” Nick ran his fingers up and down my cut.
“Fuck, I’m so sorry.” Then he kissed me on the top of my head. Like he used to… “And this guy better hope that he never meets me or I will kill him.” I looked up into his eyes and managed a smile. “Come on, I’ll bring you to my house.” He said standing up, and extending his hand for me. I took it and stood up.
“Nick, you don’t have to bring me to your house, you can just drop me off at home or I can call a cab-”
“No,” he cut me off. “Your not staying home alone, especially after what just happened, come on you can come with me.”
“Are you sure?” I asked.
“Yes. Besides, my mom has been dying to see you again.” He smiled taking my hand. I caught myself smiling too, and then I let go of his hand. “What’s wrong?” he seemed really confused.
“Nick I really, really, appreciate you coming for me, I owe you BIG, but, well, I mean…”I hesitated pushing my hair out of my face, “you broke my heart, and I don’t know.” I stopped walking and looked up at the stars. He didn’t say anything and opened the passenger door for me. I didn’t get into the car; I just turned and looked at him. “Nick please say something.”
He sighed. “Get in the car you’re turning purple.” I did as I was told, and he closed the door behind me. I did up my seat belt, and sat sideways looking out my window. Nick got in beside me, and started the car. No one said anything for 15 minutes; I was replaying everything that had happened, in my head over and over again. Then Nick finally broke the silence. “ How’s your cut arm?” I almost completely forgot, I was so distracted, the cut was clotting over but my arm was completely red from blood.
“It’s still sore, but it stopped bleeding.”
“Okay, well we have to make sure we take care of that when we get home.”
“Nick?” I mumbled.
“Yea?” I know how hard he was trying not to look at me; he kept his eyes locked on the road.
“Thanks.” Then I turned away from him and set my head against the window. Another silent ten minutes went by then we finally turned into his driveway. When I saw his familiar wooden door, a lot of good memories came flowing back into my mind, like the first time I met his family, the first time he told me he loved me; and a whole new emotion came flooding into me. I was mad and sad at him all at the same time, he was being a jerk ignoring me in the car, I mean I have every right in the world to be mad at him, but at the same time I realized that I still do love him, no matter how much I tried to convince myself other wise. And I found myself crying all over again.
“Come on Mel, let’s get you cleaned-up.” Then he stepped out of the car. I undid my seat belt and stepped out of the car too. Nick walked around the front of the Toyota Camry and came around and grabbed my hand as I went to walk up the stairs to the front porch. “Hey,” he said pulling me close to him, he let go of my wrist and grabbed my waist with his one hand, and with the other he pushed my hair out of my face. “You’re okay now, don’t worry.” He held me for a minute, “Wow you are really shaking, you probably have low blood sugar and pressure,” I loved how he knew absolutely everything there is to know about me. “Hurry, lets get you cleaned and get some food in you.” Then he led me into the house. His mom met us at the door.
“Oh my goodness Melanie!” Shannon sighed. “What happened?” I turned and looked at Nick.
“Uh actually mom, Mel was just about to go up for a shower, but I can fill you in if its okay with her.” Then he looked back at me, all I could manage was a nod.
“Alright go wash up dear.” Shannon said. And with that Nick and I turned and ran up the stairs. I loved Nick’s house it was an older house, in Kitchener, the upstairs hall was so narrow, the bathroom was located right smack at the end of the hall, and Nick’s room was the room to the left of the bathroom.
We walked into Nick’s room first. I loved Nick’s room best; the two of us redid his full room over Christmas break, with paint from my mom’s store. His walls were a nice royal blue colour, and he had a queen size bed with a blue and red plaid pattern, and he had a dresser shoved into the one corner. It was funny because His room wasn’t that small, but his queen-sized bed took up so much room that it made his room look small.
I was impressed by how clean his room was, there was one pile of clothes piling out of the closet, and his books and papers and his backpack were spread on the floor beside his bed. “Here, just sit here and I’ll find you some clothes to change into.” I sat down on his bed, and Nick stepped over to his dresser and went searching through the drawers until he found a pair of soccer shorts, and my favorite Abercrombie tee that he wore. “Okay this should do, come on lets get you in the shower.” We walked into the bathroom and he started the water for me then left back downstairs. The shower felt so good, it was nice and warm and I actually felt clean, I washed all the make-up off my face, and I washed my arm, the water turned red, from the blood. Then when I got out of the shower I changed into Nick’s clothes. It smelt like him, my favorite smell in the world, it was a mix of the body spray Nick always used, the fabric softener his mom used and his shampoo.
I walked down the hall and sat on the stairs listening to Nick and Shannon speaking.
“So you mean she got attacked?” Shannon asked, sounding very nervous.
“I guess that’s how it seems,”
“Oh Nick, she should contact the authorities.”
“No, she can’t mom she doesn’t even know the guy.”
“this is one ugly situation…” She sighed. “Well, what’s going on with you two?” She asked raising an eyebrow. Nick sighed I leaned in closer.
“ I honestly don’t know mom, like I really do love her, but I really fucked up as well.”
“She called you though didn’t she?”
“What do you mean?”
“Just now, when she was in trouble, she called you.” She said smiling the same crooked smile that Nick had.
“I honestly don’t know mom-“
“Nick?” I asked quietly walking down the stairs.
“Oh hey, how are you feeling?” He asked coming over to me.
“Better,” I smiled a weak smile, “ Still pretty shaky though, but its probably mostly nerves”. I said looking down at my hands. He grabbed one of my hands.
“Come on let’s go raid the fridge.” He said winking at me. The kitchen was a little small but I love every bit of it. I went and sat down at the counter, while Nick went trough the fridge. As I was looking over his kitchen my eyes set on the microwave’s clock.
“It’s 1:30?” I gasped. Nick laughed.
“Yea, what time did you think it was?”
“I don’t know, earlier tough.” He laughed again, oh how I loved his laugh.
“So what do you want to eat? We don’t really have anything super good for you, well there’s pasta noodles just from earlier today, but there’s no sauce or anything…”
“Nick that’ll be great. Thank you so much.” I got up and walked over to him and kissed his cheek.
“Why don’t you go back up to my room and chose a movie you would like to watch on my laptop,” He said putting the noodles into the microwave.
“Alright,” I responded. “ Thanks so much again Nick, I appreciate it so much, you have no idea!” Then I ran out of the kitchen and back up the stairs, and into his room. I went to the shelf that hung above his dresser, there were about 50 movies lined up on the shelf. Then Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a picture, hanging on his tack board, above his bed. The bulletin board made me laugh, there were pictures of nick and all his friends, and his family, and picture clips out of magazines, and right smack in the middle of the board was a picture of him and I, so I leaned forward and took it off the board. I had never seen this before it actually was a card. The front, which was the picture, I was trying to remember when that picture was taken, and then I remembered, It was the day after I got out of the hospital, and I came over to Nicks house, and we were watching movies together, and so we were on the couch downstairs, and I was sitting on his lap, playing with his fingers, Nicks older brother Sam took that picture from the top of the stairs in the basement, and he took the picture at the perfect time, that we both look so happy, and peaceful the picture was really artistic too. It was my favorite picture of the two of us. Then I Flipped It open and began to read what was inside.
It started out with the words to the chorus of the song don’t want to miss a thing by Aerosmith, our song. My eyes started to water again, so I backed up and lifted my self onto his bed. And continued to read. The whole card was about everything that happened, and him apologizing, and saying how much he loved me. I re-read it again and again and again, until Nick walked in with the hot noodles.
“What do you got there?” He asked, laughing. I turned to face him. “Oh god, what’s wrong?” He asked looking petrified. I lifted the card and showed him.
He set the food down on his bed and walked around to me. “Oh yea, I forgot that I had that hanging around…” He said running his fingers through his hair.
“Why did you never show me this?” I asked wiping a tear off my face.
“Because you were so mad and hurt, and I knew we were done, and that there wouldn’t have been anyway to get you back, so I just left it.”
“What why? I was mad and hurt, but I was also confused, I had no clue what the hell happened, and I didn’t want us to be done, because I loved,” I sighed, “love, you so much. You should have given it to me.” God, he was making me madder now. “Everything is such a mess.”
“I’m sorry, I guess another reason why I didn’t send it to you, was because I thought you would find it stupid, and corny” He blushed. I stood up and walked over to him.
“I thought it was the sweetest, most amazing thing anyone has ever written for me.” And with that, he bent down and kissed me, like he had never kissed me before, I kissed him back throwing my arms around his neck. To my surprise he pulled away first.
“Oh my god, you are so shaky. Here sit and you can eat.” I walked over to his bed, and jumped up and shifted so that I sat with my back against the wall, he came and sat beside me. He gave me the bowl with the hot noodles, and a fork. I didn’t realize how hungry I actually was, I took a huge bite, and the noodles burnt my throat as I swallowed.
“This is so good.” I said smiling up at him then taking another bite. “Thank you.” Then when I finished the bowl I set it down on the nightstand beside me.
“There, feeling better?” He asked.
“Oh my gosh yes so much better, thanks.”
“No problem,” he smiled. The he kissed my forehead. “So what movie do you want to watch?”
“I don’t know… surprise me.” He smiled got up and grabbed a movie case and sat back down beside me. He didn’t show me the case, he just popped it in to his laptop, and set I on my lap. The he moved closer to me and put his arms around my waist and I rested my head on his chest.
To be completely honest I wasn’t paying any attention to the movie what so ever, I don’t think nick was either. “I miss this so much,”
“What?” He whispered in my ear.
“This, you and me watching movies together and like everything.” I mumbled.
His kissed the top of my head. “I missed it too, but now everything’s can go back to normal.”
“I’d like that,” I smiled, then I turned around out of his arms and kissed him gently at first then harder. He set his hands on my waist and pulled me away gently.
“Hey Mel, take it easy, I promise you I’m not going anywhere.” He smiled, then he pulled me into a hug.
“I know,” I mumbled into his neck, “But still…”
“I promise you,” he said shifting so he was sitting beside me looking me straight in the eye. “I won’t ever hurt you again… But right now you should get some sleep.” With one quick motion, he slid me under the covers and set the laptop down on the ground. I sat up abruptly.
“Where are you going to sleep?” I asked. Trying not to sound as needy as I did.
“Mom’s making me sleep on the couch, she figures that you have gone through enough today and you don’t need to be waking up next to me,” He laughed, I tried to smile, but he didn’t buy it. He came around and sat beside me. “What’s wrong baby?” he asked pushing the hair from my face.
“Nothing, honestly…” I said looking away from his gorgeous blue eyes.
“Come on I know you too well. what’s going on in that beautiful head of yours?” He asked. I blushed and looked back to him.
“I’m scared…” I mumbled, feeling really embarrassed.
“It’s okay babe I understand.” Then unexpectedly he jumped over me and sat on the other side of the bed, “I can stay with you.” I smiled up at him and kissed him, then I lay down, with my head on his chest.
