A View Of Life From An Irish Catholic
By Paul McCann
I was baptised as a Catholic in Holy Cross Church that day
and started learning all the rules about life and how to pray .
I used to think that after we turned ten life would be ok
Because God gave us ten commandments that we had to obey
and if we done that before ten , they would be out of the way
So I tried to do my best and followed the rules everyday .
I learn all the hymns and said novenas as a Catholic should .
I understood the mysteries which I thought was very good .
There’s 10 hail Mary’s in each decade of the rosary to say .
so God gave us 10 fingers instead of rosary beads to pray .
After ten years of age there were sacraments I had to get
and we couldn’t eat meat on Friday but how could I forget
I accidently had some bacon and thought I’d go to hell
So off I ran to confession with the sin I had to tell .
I had to do ten hail Marys for my penance Father said
and said an act of contrition and all my fears were mislaid .
I had more scruples that the pupils at St Gabriels school
I wanted to get to heaven and couldn’t break any rule ..
Then when I was a teenager the teacher he said to me
You better count on the meaning that is in the dictionary .
Learn to multiply and sure enough God said same as well.
So I got married early and had ten children let me tell ,
I multiplied as I was told and then left the rest to Him ,
Being an Irish Catholic and living a life without sin .
