Like the first flowers of Spring
early snowflakes stir the heart,
with tantalising beauty,
falling hypnotically
to a uniquely slushy death,
reminding me of the day you left
Oblivious to fate
these delightful diamonds
catch, reflect, and create
aesthetically perfect
Heaven-sent light
in my every day hell
Rescued on occasion,
prolonging nature’s wonder,
passing generous gusts
lend helping hands
with loud applause,
taking my heart for a ride
Raped by warm echoes
from the domineering South,
these crystalized angels
succumb to the inevitability
of transient, empty lives,
as I watch from the window
Beauty gone in the thaw,
reincarnation beholds,
together we rise to the clouds
and dance with the wind,
awaiting our chance
to do it all again

The juxtaposition and metaphor is really well conceived old pesky. The penultimate stanza is really good. I like it especially when we are taken on a surprising and unanticipated journey. rebirth and redirection, into the sky, back again, metamorphosis - superb, I could go on, but I'll just finish on a "well done"
Blessing | November 25, 2011 - 14:48
How sweet! Not a word I would generally prescribe to your writing oldpesky. There's a pleasant surprise.
fatboy74 | November 25, 2011 - 14:53
Pesky you sly old dog - I like this a lot, it sounds like wot good poems should do. Have you fallen out with our good friends the full-stop, semi-colon and hyphen? Nice one. :-)
shoe | November 25, 2011 - 15:00
Really very lovely, you are a softie, more please.
Overthetop1 | November 25, 2011 - 15:14
Ah - I knew you were a softie really. This is beauty incarnate. A vey well-deserved cherry if you ask me (not that you ever do - sob).
oldpesky | November 25, 2011 - 15:21
Jings! Crivens! Help ma Boab! I've created a monster. A wee cutesy cuddly monster, but a monster nonetheless. I'm humbled, really humbled.
scratch, you make it sound as if I knew what I was doing.
Julie, you are so kind, as always. Hope you enjoy your motown night tomorrow.
Blessing, I'm surprised myself. Thought I'd take a break from all that drugs, swearing and violence, and show my softer, melting side.
fatboy, I wouldn't know what to do with full stops, etc in a poem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
shoe, yes, I am a big softie at heart.
OTT, I didn't even notice it had a cherry until I read your comment. Now I'm filling up too.
Thank you everyone. I best get back to work now.
skinner_jennifer | November 25, 2011 - 15:46
Hi there oldpesky,
you've created a master piece here, now you can say
you're 'a master of all.'
I love the softness and sentiments in this poem,
I think you've proved your a poet.
Congrats on well deserved cherries.
Jenny.
MistakenMagic | November 25, 2011 - 18:18
A captivating poem, oldpesky - had me transfixed from the first line to the very end. Well done on the cherry!

Ah. Second thoughts are always the best. Poetry in this is first class. It does not require explanation. But I must admit to a slight, sly grin blighters.
Thankyou both.
seashore | November 26, 2011 - 00:27
I hate multi-talented people like you and I'm not jealous at all though a tiny bit of me wishes I'd written your poem - sort of....
oldpesky | November 26, 2011 - 12:45
Hi Jennifer and magic, thanks for dropping in with such lovely comments.
Blighters, it is my love of snow that made this easy to write. Come this time of year I spend far too long looking at the Glencoe webcams in the hope of lovely fresh powdery snow for me and young pesky to go play in. Look at the picture on my blog and you'll see why.
Julie, good to see Terry doing shows in Brighton. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
scratch, are you back again? nice one. I'm sure you could give me more than a few pointers how to improve this poem. Feel free.
seashore, being called multi-talented is a pleasant change from being called multi-personalitied (of course that's a real word)
oldpesky | November 26, 2011 - 21:48
Julie, feel free to write anything you want under any of my works. I'll always get back to you, although it usually takes me a while, as I'm either busy writing, reading or just being a lazy sod...or watching football, my biggest vice...or sometimes even watching X Factor!!!
Geoffrey | November 27, 2011 - 09:50
And I thought you didn't ever read poetry let alone write it. Wwell done and 'congrats old chap' on the cherry.
oldpesky | November 27, 2011 - 10:56
Good morning young fellow. Funnily enough, I didn't think I wrote poetry either. Seems I'm a darker horse than Black Beauty.
I best go and get my chores done now.
Larkin Williamson | November 27, 2011 - 12:11
A very, very fine poem. I might even smile at snow now...even when I shovel it. :o)

Larkin, next time it snows get yourself a snowboard and build a jump with your shovel.
Scozen, ah, the mighty one is what we like to call the Coe.
Scratch, you should've taken more water, sorry I mean whisky.
Julie, my son is doing fine, still attending his creative writing class, and got a wee job over christmas. As for everyday hell in the poem, it's supposed to contrast with the heaven-sent line. If you want to send me long messages why not put them in an email? I sent you an email yesterday, hope you got it. kevin x

You have a funny way of showing you're not a poet: by writing a good poem. I enjoyed it immensely, Kevin.
I've tried writing poetry, but I always end up spooning a loon or mooning a goon.
