Put a Tiger in your tank

from the ABC set What was I thinking! they sounded so good in my head.

I can't say I'm suprised;
covering my relief with tears
to save your feelings
and because you once said
that crying suits me

Your lovemaking tonight
- you always insisted
on calling it that,
though it felt more like the other
more explicit adjective -
was at it's most basic
and over even sooner
than usual

I know I'm not pretty, or fun
or good in bed, you told me so often enough,
I tried to please, leaving my stockings on,
and the light, I kept my eyes closed though
didn't you?

Thanks for the lift, I'll miss the TR7 and Axel F
having a boyfriend and stopping out
'Dirty, Dirty girl', my mum said,
Anyway...fair's fair...
I'll give you back the tiger
if you give back my cherry

I think this is what they call unflinching shoe - It feels very real which makes the detail all the more effective, like the dry humour of the last section. A powerful poem. ATB FB

Well I certainly remember this ad, shoe...I have to admit;-) Way back in the sixties, or thereabouts. Esso - if my memory serves me correctly. A powerful advertisment - would have to be if we still remember it now and a powerful poem, most certainly, as fb quite rightly says.

Love those wonderful last line, Shirley! Very blunt, and as fatboy sayd: unflinching. And it really works, well done ;)

Dear wee Shoe.

"...I'll miss the TR7 and Axel F
having a boyfriend and stopping out..."

You are well rid of someone who had a TR7.
Can you imagine driving with the hood down and Axel F playing...?

kind regards.

Thanks fb and Magic, a least a little humour got through,
Tina, I think the Esso Tiger must have had a revival around late 80's early 90's, I most remember that one with the tiger in the snow, beautiful!

ScoZen, ha, ha, yes I am and I don't have to imagine! thanks for your kind thoughts,:}

I admire the honesty of this piece, painful at times but rewarding as it makes for a beautiful poem with a healthy dose of humour!
