Black velvet,
she’d ever
had a thing for...
For a year
after she went,
it hung
on a hook
in the hall
gathering dust;
the coat
that was
‘so her’.
A touch frayed
at the seams,
but she’d loved it,
nonetheless.
Her perfume
lingered still...
Byzance –
a taste we shared.
And in its pocket –
written
in her own
familiar hand,
a shopping-list:
‘Mozzarella,
Broccoli,
and Cheerios’.
Just a black,
velvet coat,
but she wore it
so well.

Let Ashley wear it, I'm sure she will wear it well.

What a great idea, Sco Zen;-) I shall give it to her tomorrow, and timely too. She got her AS results today and got three straight A's, for her main subjects - English being the most important.
And you are right. She will wear it well;-)
Many thanks.

I bet that black velvet coat will never leave your
house, I can imagine it was very precious.
A very special read Tina.

So few words but each one special and exactly right. Beautiful.
You must be very proud of your granddaughter, Tina!

I agree with ScoZen- give the coat to Ashley- but keep the note. A good title for this.

Hi, Pia;-) Strangely enough, I gave it to her just this afternoon. And the note I have surely kept. Ashley and her aunt were very close, both confessed 'shopaholics', and went on many shopping expeditions together. She intends to wear the coat until it is threadbare...and like her Aunt, she will surely 'wear it well'.
Thank you for your lovely comment, and yes, the title...inspired, of course, by the late and great, Amy Winehouse.
