Blackberry Wine

from the ABC set Silver Spun Sand Poems

‘Season of mists
and mellow fruitfulness...’
And of blackberries,
the caviar of hedgerows;
September’s the time,
when the hours
between sun and shade
get more pressing.

Our plastic bowls
set down on dew-soaked
grass; wasps grow drowsy.
No more the need
to fight them off
as, tipsy, they gorge,
fit to bust.

The berries yield
to our touch – rich,
ripe, and shouting
to be picked – joining
mouth, teeth and tongue
in succulent oneness.

On tiptoe we sieve
through a criss-cross
of twigs – tangled
like mermaids’ tresses...
Branches stripped bare,
looking on through
to a fathomless blue.
And, for a moment,

our minds are emptied
of all others but this...
right here, right now;
how red are your lips,
and how sweet is
our blackberry wine
in its consummation.

How wonderful are your words, this is such a beautiful poem, you seem to know exactly what I like,
one of my favourite wines blackberry, just saying it
makes me want to have a drink.
Your poem reminds me of my walk last Saturday in
Severnak Forest, there were people foraging for
blackberries, but they are coming to the end of their
life now.
Jenny.

Thank you, Jenny. So glad you enjoyed this.

We are lucky and have a bounty of blackberries which border our garden. They really do make wonderful wine, and ours at their best now;-)

Some absolutely delicious images here, dear Tina. I love:

'Our plastic bowls
set down on dew-soaked
grass; wasps grow drowsy.
No more the need
to fight them off
as, tipsy, they gorge,
fit to bust.'

I can picture the scene so vividly. Well done!

Hi I like the way you split the stanzas so the poem just continues fluently. Very nice atmospheric poem. I have picked blackberries as well this season. Just go for a walk and there they are in abundancy. Lovely;)
Thanks for the atmosphere Tina- well done
pia ;)

Love the plastic bowls...tipsy they gorge fit to bust. Cried my eyes out on this one. It just hit the spot. I have a friend who I'm trying to get to join, she does this to me every time she write a poem. I think my sense of humour makes me susceptible in a strange way I suppose I keep my softer side too repressed.

Silver Spun Sand | October 18, 2010 - 17:14

Thank you, Firebird;-)

Maybe you do, Geoffrey, but I thank you so much for your kind words and I do hope your friend joins. The more the merrier;-)

Better late than never - this is wonderful, Tina.

I agree with everything that has been said, and wish I'd have read this sooner so I could've said some of it myself! You have a great talent for setting the scene - how I wish I was a tipsy wasp nestled in amongst those berries right now :)

Well done on the cherry, much enjoyed this,

Rachel - you seem to have quite a way with words yourself;-)

Thanks for your lovely comment.

This has brought back to me the memory of a child sitting on a Welsh holiday hillside eating still warm bread and scavenging for windberries amongst the undergrowth (otherwise known as the sheep's toilet - but hey, we were sturdier then)

Unfortunately I am now allergic to all fresh fruiy (and veg) but thanks for bringing a happy memory to the forefront of my mind.

Oh... and well done on such a great piece.

What a shame about your allergy... and the sheep's toilet;-)

My daughter is allergic to many foods too, especially ones containing flour, etc.

Anyway, thanks for reading and I am glad this one brought back good memories.
