It was raining, much like today,
the first time we met –
the bus-stop, Turnpike Lane;
your clothes, soaked through.
We were teenagers then,
both typists and jive crazy.
We became inseparable –
shared books, Buddy Holly EPs
and boyfriends...
Then life moved us on –
we lost touch, until now,
many decades later,
when all that remains
is to commit to memory
these precious things.
Your dress, like sails
after a stormy crossing
and sharing an umbrella –
your hand cradling mine...

I have just seen the photo which elicited this. It shows that the power of the poem is such, that you made me believe it was personal !!!.

I thought this was true at first, before I saw the link. You expressed it beautifully.

Silver Spun Sand | August 31, 2009 - 16:18
Hilary - yes it's true enough that this poem was prompted by the picture on Flicker, but I think it would be an unusual author who put nothing of themselves in at least some of what they write. So maybe you didn't jump to too many conclusions originally;-)
Thanks once again. Your words more than appreciated.

I was 'jive crazy' too. 'All Shook Up' by the King, was one of my faves. Had to make do with my mum's sideboard as a partner though;-) And I adored Buddy Holly and remember being mortified at his untimely death.
Much appreciate your comments;-)
