Mother Nature's Son

I’ve waited all day
for this feeling
for this walk home in the rain
It’s happened how many times?
- the rain I mean
but the shock
and angst
still covers their helpless faces…
“What the fuck is this?!”
empty
question
expression
repeated
Maybe because it’s summer rain
unexpected feet
are caught off guard
clad only by sandal
dribbles of pavement juice
trickle between toes
and I ask
and I ask
why don’t they just let themselves go?
Hair will dry and re-shape
one day
once more
clothes can hang if needed
just breathe
don’t be defeated
Time still ticks on
at the same pace
A life will pass anyway
wet or dry
Today I sat in a coma
where everything was parched
it’s only now
enjoying the grey slant
of the angled pavement
smiling at impromptu waterfalls
on stairs
and
spontaneous fountains
from shop front squares
that
I can truly feel awake
Its only now
with a soggy heel
and dripping eyebrow
that I am truly
Mother Nature’s Son
