agents again

...

some time ago i asked for advice on here about agents as mine had lost my latest manuscript and also failed to deliver any constructive advice on the first book but had instead touted it in a rough form ... no surprise then when it didnt sell ...

i was advised here to bin her off and get someone else ... i think maybe rokkitnite said ... you have to have someone who loves your work ...

now, due to ferg's impressive generosity - she put me in touch with an agent she met via the uea ma - i have sent my second book to this agent and yesterday she told me she wants to represent the book ...

she concluded her letter ... "all in all i loved the book" ...

so i wanted to say thank you to those who advised me in the first place ... i think it is easy to lack confidence in yourself or your work when you are just starting out in the publishing world ... that thread make me think i had to demand better for myself and my books ... and i am grateful ...

i am also immensely grateful to ferg ... not just because of the introduction ... but because ferg is brilliantly supportive and through my discussions with her i realised that unless *i* spoke up for my work in a positive way - instead of being ridiculously self effacing and apologetic in that terrible english manner ... "oh i'm awfully sorry but i've written a little sort of book and if you wouldnt mind ... if you have time ... maybe you could perhaps read it ... " etc. - then nobody would look at my work seriously...

when i contacted this agent and in all dealings with her i am confident even if i don't especially feel it ... "here is my book ... i love it and i hope you will too" was the style of my approach ...

it makes a difference ... so thank you for that ferg ...

now the experience of writing the second has taught me so much i know i have to go and rewrite the first ...

Good luck with the book, Fish. Hope you've got 007 - or his female counterpart - this time :O)
Great news! I am just delighted for you - but it is very well deserved. Now stick out for a million quid advance...
Congrats Fish! And self-effacing is far better then the other extreme, 'Check out my book - it's the most amazing work of fiction you'll ever read, you lucky, lucky thing,' tactic that agents get faced with all too often. The former will probably make them smile - the latter will - rightly - turn their stomach. It does make a massive difference if you feel your agent is someone you can approach, ask questions of, etc. If you're going to have an effective partnership you need to be able to communicate - and obviously that's made ten times easier if they love your work!
I have been beaming ever since fish told me this great news. I want to use this forum to officially say, 'YESSSSSSSSSSSS!' and also 'You deserve it' because you do, and I stick with the thing I've always said since I first read your work 'you are a very talented writer' and I can't wait to go into my local bookshop and pick a deliciously covered copy of your book up and stroke its jacket.
Ohh...Fergs, I think you just came up with a great way of marketing Fish's future books, lickable chocolate covers..Wonka wallpaper style.
lickable chocolate covers are certainly the way to go... fish get onto your marketing people pronto..
Nice one Fish, thanks for sharing that with us, and everyone who chipped in there. Let me know the details of yer book when it's on its way!
hey there... cheers all ... and yes i think it may be better to be self effacing than an over the top confident self promoting wanker ... i know which i would prefer if i were reading letters from wannabe novelists ... god knows now how long the process takes or how much wonga it earns ... but i am thrilled about it ... and wouldnt scratch 'n' sniff covers be more hygienic?
Ah...yes, but if they are lickable then the market in second hand ones will go down, therefore more people will have to buy them new and you and agenty people will be quids in.
Bloody geniarse I am.
but what if some unpleasant toddler has dribbled and slobbered on your copy before you buy it?
Yes, and if your bookmark fell out you could tell exactly how far you had got by the chocolate fingerprints :O)
extra potassium
they can be wrapped in some sellophaney type stuff of course, and there would be no chocolatey fingerprints is only flavoured...am looking in yellow pages for Willy Wonka's phone number as I type!
Is there a low calorie edition for those on a diet?
Well done, fish!
When I get my copy from Waterstones I'll be able to tell the sales assistant " of course, I've known her since she was just a tadpole"
Are you calling her a frog, Hox? Is Allison French?
Oh dear.
Excellent news fish, congrats and best wishes - hope you make a mint.

ooo la la ... ta julian ... have just had a long chat on the phone with my new agent ... oh god how good it feels to say that ... it all feels like it's falling into place ... and it's only taken 40 years!
Nearly forty one for me, and counting!
Ooo! I feel so young! Please feel free to smack the smug youthful face :)
*smacks smug young chops & sits down for nice novelistic chat with dog*
well done fish i look forward to buying a signed copy one day

Fish, if you get shortlisted for a Whitbread or a Booker prize, can I come to the prize evening and sit on your table please? I'll pay you! jude

...because I know the book will be fab and i like fancy napkin folds. I'm on the wagon so I won't guzzle all the champers...promise ...

will you be a nun by then? you can come for free if you're a nun ... x x x
I have accepted that I can never be a nun (well sister) despite my good intentions but as Marcel Prous said ""The voyage of discovery is not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes."
