George Best Gets Red Card!
So he's finally been sent off..permanently!
I can't feel sorry for him, after all he had twice as many livers as the rest of us and couldn't resist pickling both of 'em.
It IS very sad though, all that talent so wantonly squandered and all for booze and women.
If you had to sacrifice your life for something then booze and women aren't such bad choices.
I had the great pleasure of knowing George for a while. I used to present an LBC radio show called 'Talking Sport' and George was a regular contributor. I never caught the train home after he'd been on the show. He was good fun, generous and charming - and I'm sad that he's gone.
I feel immensely sorry for Best's family, who I am sure have gone through the most horrific time, (and not just over the last few weeks), but I'm afraid that my compassion doesn't stretch as far as feeling sad that someone who was given the gift of a second chance at life and thrown it away has died.
I'm only grateful that our transplant laws don't allow the donors family to know who the recipient is...
My cousin died young, and my Aunt and Uncle made the incredibly difficult decision to donate his organs, to help someone else to live. They are not naive, they knew that transplants don't always work, and that people often die soon after or a few years after. But they would have been absolutely devastated to think that this most precious gift had been squandered away, by a person set to self destruct mode.
Perhaps giving liver transplants to chronic alcoholics (no matter who they are) is not the best way to promote being an organ donor? I know it's made me think twice about being on the register.
I fear they may all be too pickled to be of any use to anyone.
I know nothing about football, but people who do say he was a genius. Re his drinking, I think it was an illness. He tried to stop, many times, but didn't succeed. I wouldn't want to judge him, because goodness knows I'm not perfect either.
he was a footballing genius, and should be remembered that way..
rip georgie best...
