Really enjoyed this poem, well written. Reminded me, not of my grand-dad but my father-in-law. At the age of 80 we took him to Paris and just like neilmac's grandad, he 'was a man of simple taste; no croissants not polenta crossed his lips'. But he did develop a real taste in the end for croissants - looked like a regular Frenchman, sitting outside a cafe by the Arc de Triomphe, dipping them in his coffee boule. Many moons ago now, unfortunately. Anyway thankyou neilmac - it conjured up fond memories for me. SSS

Thanks SSS; it wasn't 100% accurate, as my Grandad was indeed a coal miner but I have no evidence that he liked jazz music, killed anyone in the war or didn't love my gran, the last two are generational things of getting over traumatic things without fuss and making the best of a bad job.
