Fantastic!
The prose is sparse and just right for the subject. Brings it all back.
Yan - just out of interest - are you from Middlewich?
I particularly like the first line: "all my old
chums' faces are either long and sullen or proud, red and round." It doesn't matter where the "home town" is, everyone can relate to this. First class, cheers mate!

Yes, g*4-areth, I'm from Middlewich (originally). You notice the landmarks right? Thanks for the comments, much appreciated. ;) There's nothing more mind-teasing than the incomprehensible eagerly avowed - Dennett

Yes - I was suspicious when you mentioned Mystery Wood, and then the White Bear confirmed it.
So, did you live in Middlewich yourself? Mystery Wood is quite specific to the area. There's nothing more mind-teasing than the incomprehensible eagerly avowed - Dennett

My wife's from Middlewich. I'm from Portsmouth. We met at Crewe+Alsager. Spent a good few nights getting drunk in Wheelock Street. Always had a soft spot for the Shit 'n' Shovel. No idea what it's called this week. I realise this thread will make no sense to anyone else!
I used to go to ye olde shit n shovel regularly from 1993-1996. Maybe I know your wife. Did she attend m/wich high? Used to love it when Dave was there at tut n shive. Baths on the ceiling, yards of ale poking out of every drunken huddle. Rock discos, shit bands, the lot :) There's nothing more mind-teasing than the incomprehensible eagerly avowed - Dennett

You don't have to answer that, btw, I was just being nosey ;) There's nothing more mind-teasing than the incomprehensible eagerly avowed - Dennett

Ha ha! No problem. She's called Kathie and she did go to MWH.. We're both about 4 years older than you. The first time I went to Middlewich the pub was called the Red Lion, but it changed soon after that to be the Shit N Shovel (or something like that). I REALLY liked it then! I think it was my first experience of that sort of theme pub. They're ten-a-penny these days, but they were something else in them days...
