Bye, bye Scotland?

The Scottish National Party is apparently going to form the next government in Scotland: http://politics.guardian.co.uk/scotland/story/0,,2073678,00.html

Is this the end of Britain? Do we care?

~It's a maze for rats to try, it's a race for rats to die.~

if they do manage to form a government, it'll be a minority one, they're 14 seats short of a parliamentary majority, they need a coalition to run if effectively, the lib dems have already said no, tories are unlikely to agree... if a government isn't formed in the first 28 days, the election is run again, maybe they'll be better at counting the votes by then, and there won't be 100,000 spoiled ballots
Slightly off topic, but I noticed t'other day the rather-pleased-with-herself Tory councillor for Great Malvern spouting on about how wonderful it was that a massive 48% of people had turned up to vote at Malvern in the recent elections, and how her usurping of the Lib Dem candidate says so much about what people want for the country. Is it me, or is this just a load of old tosh? 48% might be a relatively large proportion of the electorate, but it still means that over half of the people either can't be bothered to vote or feel their vote would be wasted or are conscientiously not voting in order to make a point about the electoral system or the fact that all the parties with any slightest chance of winning are only very marginally different from each other or whatever. And within that 48% the chances are that no more than half of those (probably more like 40%) actually voted Tory, meaning it's highly unlikely that more than a quarter of the whole electorate of Great Malvern actively chose the Tory candidate for their council. And she was excited about this! Hmm, says a lot about the state of British Politics, if you ask me... :/ pe ps oid ... What is "The Art of Tea"? ... (www.pepsoid.wordpress.com)

Scotland, though... Well, from what I remember of my British Politics A-level, many yonks ago, if we do finally become politically totally seperate from Scotland, that will totally put the Labour Party out of the running to ever hope to win a General Election in England again...... :/ pe ps oid ... Good point, Mr Soid. And then there's the small point of us not being able to plunder their oil supplies any more. We need Scotland on side. Keep them sweet with softer laws on wife-beating, better heroin and more effective deep fat fryers for their mars bars. http://naptime500.blogspot.com

"if we do finally become politically totally seperate from Scotland, that will totally put the Labour Party out of the running to ever hope to win a General Election in England again...... :/" I think that's an exagerration. Labour was definitely the biggest party in England in 1997 and 2001, I think they even had a majority. It would be more difficult, though and I imagine if Scotland went it's own way while Labour were still in power, they'd change the voting system for Westminster pretty sharpish.

"We need Scotland on side. Keep them sweet with softer laws on wife-beating, better heroin and more effective deep fat fryers for their mars bars." And that would be Representative of all Scot's I suppose? Funny. I'm a Scot and I don't recall ever doing any of those things.
More haggis and caber tossing then? pe ps oid ... What is "The Art of Tea"? ... (www.pepsoid.wordpress.com)

I`m Scottish too and have never beaten up my wife, ingested heroin or tossed a caber . Neither have I eaten deep fried Mars bars or haggis. Now this might be a case of sterotypical rascism on the previous posters part or I might just be a boring bastard... I used to live with two Scotsmen and they were sober at least some of the time, and I once saw one of them eat a salad.

Must have been from Edinburgh-they are are a shower of pansies. Us Weegies arra business. Then again-don`t all English-persons attend public schools, have homosexual tendencies, devour crumpets incessantly and insist that milk is put in a teacup first?
That is when they are not being comprehensively thrashed at cricket/tennis/rugby/football/Eurovision/ sheepshagging/ by a small foreign country they used to rule?
Ah ha, Gilbert, you’ve reminded me. My dad’s from Glasgow and when the other day I told my daughter to get out of the road, she looked at me perplexed and said, ‘Road? I’m not in a road.’ So maybe it’s a particularly Scottish expression (either that or my kid’s a pedantic pain in the arse). I also remember going to visit my uncle Matt in Scotland when I was little and nudging my sister to say, ‘he’s making the tea upside down!’ ~ www.fabulousmother.com
Yup, those quaint natives. No idea of social ettiquete, elitism, suppressed homosexuality, or their place in the world. Shoot the bastards, that`s what I say.
`Yup, those quaint natives.` Of course, Gilbert, that was the sentiment I was expressing, me being a supercilious english woman, how could it be otherwise? Bloody hell. *adds ‘chippy bastards’ to list of generalizations* p.s. The Scots pour tea like the upper classes do here. I was making fun of myself. ~ www.fabulousmother.com
