I just looked at the website and gave myself nightmares. How is the violence of fundamentalist men ever stopped short of someone killing them? They are just mindless animals. But seriously I would like to think there is a better answer but can't think of any.Create a State for free women??? Their own enclave? Only give aid to women (microfinance ,healthcare)?
If there are no better solutions we had darn well better be tooled up to deal with the creeps.

Well now, there is no answer, is there? But I am in despair at the things done in the name of religion. It doesn't just happen in Afghanistan, of course. Today's Sunday Times had an interesting article by Marie Colvin describing her recent visit to Basra, which the British Army are in the process of handing over to Iraqi control. Several women have been murdered by the militias for the crime of not wearing the habbaya. Of course religion is not the only factor: the widespread practice of female circumcision in Sub-Saharan Africa is a scandal in any century never mind the 21st. Won't it be wonderful when the more extreme forms of Islam take hold in Somalia? Do you feel we (not you yourself, if you prefer not to) are justified in interfering in these societies/countries on such grounds? My last few years in the military were difficult for me because I felt we were fighting an unjust war in Iraq. Reasons like the ones above I would have been more comfortable with - it's just no-one would dare offer them as grounds for war. Perhaps you feel that male aggression against these males is no answer to their oppression of women? I do think it is absolutely vital for countries to be secular: and to prosecute violence to the full extent of constitutional law no matter what kind of religious justifications are offered. Honour killings, for example, are never justified, no matter what any spokesman, government or otherwise, says in the media.
Well you have helped me just by being a thoroughly decent being.I kinda thought that Afghanistan was a bit about that. Not that womens rights are high on the agenda, but the USA and to some degree the UK understands that youth bulge (10 babies per woman Afghanistan) and in Pakistan Palestine etc will continue to cause violence because there will be an excess of young men.they are breeding warriors for the warlords armies like Nazi breeding programs. I think we (in the West)and yes us as people who attempt creativity should proffer creative solutions. How about.. we don't deal with blokes at all!! when they are all murdering bastards.Create female safe havens! Promote polyandry in agrarian areas. All bonkers I know but it is as if the men of violence continue to set the agenda and the terms for discussion when they should really be ignored .How about a secular safe haven? I wrote a poem called FGM part rant part nasty humour. I don't know if we should ever interfere in youth bulge countries. The chap who developed theory says we should just wait it out. We would be justified certainly but not likely to make things better . I do think we should be tooled up to defend ourselves well wherever we have to do it.I would have enjoyed a gunboat sailing forcefully towards Khartoum, but that is just me .We don't seem to be carrying a big enough stick to enable us to avoid using it if you see what I mean.So we have only economic influence and it all goes into the wrong pockets when we try it.

You are a truly scary person Camilla - a sexist imperialist with apparently little or no conception of history or even a willingness to consider the origins of the problems with agitate you. You bemoan "male violence" but want to sail a gunship down the Nile. Er what?
My knowledge of history is excellent thanks K.You appear to have no knowledge of a lot of things including the study of human nature and any kind of science.Your view always stems from an anarchist/communist perpective in spite of any evidence. It is a bit like the smacking debate. No one wants to smack a child or sail a gunboat anywhere ,but the child or the fundamentalist idiots in Khartoum have to believe you might do it.They have to take you seriously if you have any hope of stopping them behaving badly and dangerously. Actually come to think of it a lot of these people probably have the IQ of a toddler and the emotional maturity of one too, although they run around in big grown up bodies. We see an adult and expect a capacity to think like an adult but they actually don't have it.Their brains were formed in famine circs a lot of the time and they were not socialized to contain their impulses but just the reverse. We would be well advised to understand this and not expect them to be able to think which we seem to. With less primitve teens you threaten to remove their laptops ipods etc, economic sanctions. It is still the case, it is sad but true.We still have to have a big stick in order to not have to use it. In the UK for instance we should have prosecuted the Imam and his unpleasant relatives under stalking laws and then deported them for threatening and attempting to kill his apostate daughter.A few things like this publicly done would send a pretty good message about what is acceptable,so why dont we do it? It might infringe his human rights? As opposed to her rights to stay alive? We should not have 30 different languages in classrooms. In this way no one can learn and Mother tongue teaching is Bollo...You cannot employ 30 different translators for one child each across the land. We should do what other countries do heave them all out into English(or whatever is appropriate) classes until a certain level is reached and education can take place. Perhaps the world would be a better place K if there was a greater balance between the sexes.Lets face it blokes are doing a truly bang up job.Take female perspective out and you impoverish the whole debate.

I think there's some good points in amongst the wackiness. I think aid specifically directed towards women is a good idea and one that some aid organisations already employ. "We should not have 30 different languages in classrooms. In this way no one can learn and Mother tongue teaching is Bollo...You cannot employ 30 different translators for one child each across the land." Well know but you don't have to. If you've got 30 kids and none of them speak English, the best plan is to teach the lessons in English and they'll pick it up.

Yes indeed that is what they do in other places. But you do need to immerse them in a way that helps them to pick it up and this needs to be done without swamping them or holding back everyone else.Just sticking them in to sink is not on.
