The Hunger Site

24,000 people die every day from hunger.

Sorry, I didn't mean to put a damper on a fun message-board, but there are reasons behind my shock tactics. First of all though, here's a few more startling facts:

Every second more than an acre of rainforest disappears.

1800 children are infected daily with HIV.

Over 30,000 children will die needlessly today.

43,000 women will die of cancer this year.

There are 72 victims of landmines on a daily basis. 64 of them won't get any care.

Pretty tragic, huh? But what can we do? We can't cry for the whole world can we? We can't put money in every tin on every counter or in every outstretched hand can we? Sometimes just taking care of our own families is enough. I'd like to help but ..... well, y'know, just but.

Well, there is something you can do - and it won't cost you a penny or take any time. Visit www.thehungersite.com. On the home page you'll see a map of the world and you can watch as certain countries turn dark as another person dies of hunger. That happens 24,000 times a day.

With one click of your right forefinger you can buy one and a half bowls of rice. That will feed one person for a day. And it's all paid for by advertising. Isn't that phenomenal? You can visit this site on a daily basis and keep one person, who might otherwise die, alive for one more day.

And that's only the start! There are five other links on the page. They lead to the Rainforest Site, the Kids AIDS site, the Child Survival site, the Breast Cancer site and the Landmine site. It takes less than 30 seconds - 10 clicks in all (11 if you count the Hunger site) - to move through all of them.

You can help save 50 acres of rainforest a month, help children survive AIDS and other atrocities, donate free mammograms and help save lives and limbs.

30 seconds a day. If you shot through a traffic light today and saved yourself 30 seconds in getting to the next one, and at the end of the day found yourself with 30 seconds to spare, how would you use that time? Here's a suggestion of a way to use those 30 seconds.

But how are we going to remember to visit The hunger site on a daily basis? We might do it a couple of times, but we're bound to forget after that, aren't we?

No! It's easy! You make it your home page. When you visit www.thehungersite.com, on the left of the page simply click on "More you can do." Then scroll down the page until you come to "Make the Hunger Site your home page." Then click on "Click here for simple instructions."

That way every time you turn on your pc, there it is! There is no reason in the world why we should not do this. If you really utilize the home page that you currently have, then simply bookmark it in your favourites. Then it's always there if you want it.

11 clicks a day, less than 30 seconds - what a difference ABCtales could make to the world if we all do it.

(Suggestion to the editors - If the above makes sense, then how about placing this message in a more prominent position?).

Karl, it's a wonderful site. You are a very thoughtful, caring man. I hope the editors at ABCtales will take your suggestion and put this deserving site in a much better position. Regardless, Karl, it's people like you who make a difference. I tip my hat to you, my friend. Barry Wood

Thanks Barry, Although I doubt I'm as caring as you imagine. But on making a difference, do you remember the story of the old boy seen on a beach in Mexico chucking starfish back into the ocean? (I like to picture him very sun-tanned with long white hair and a white beard, and a tatty but clean denim shirt. And white trousers and no shoes and ..... well, whatever). When asked what he was doing, he explained that if the starfish didn't get back in the ocean then they would die. There were hundreds of starfish on the fish, and there are hundreds of beaches just like that in Mexico. This was pointed out to him with the words, "You can't possibly make a difference." The old boy quietly bent down, picked up a starfish and flung it back in the ocean. He then looked the cynic right in the eye and said, "Made a difference to that one."

Karl: Good story. I've always been the type that believes that one person can make a difference. Just think about that one person who smiles at you when you are having a shitty day.

Hi everyone, Thanks for your suggestion Karl. We did something in the magazine on them a few months ago but I will also put something on the site. Cheers, Diana

Thanks Karl for the tip - I knew there was such a site but didn't know where to find it. I've passed it on to 38 people and hope they'll do the same.

Karl - I can't believe it - there's actually an ad banner on there from some weight reducing place - lose 10 lbs by May 28th - how crass! Well, if you write click the mouse, you have to donate money -right? I got no money, honey (as Fats Domino once said). There are some sites that donate for you every time you click.

I think the whole point of Karl's message was that you DO NOT have to donate money. I just went there, clicked the "click here" link in the middle of the page and was promptly thanked for my donation of a bowl of rice. 20 seconds later I returned here. Easy. Didn't cost me a cent.

Ta, Karl, Did the same as Stormy and scored karma points. Think it's a great idea and have sent link to several mates in the hope that they'll do the same (feed the world, not score K points). Seriously, nice one :-) Am going to give making it my homepage a miss though. Miserable git that I am, I find it somewhat depressing to watch the world go black... Still, my memory's good...

Thanks for that suggestion Karl. Have done as you suggested. And Carly, the diet advert on the site is donating 50 cups of rice for everyone who signs up, so not as crass as would first appear.

It would perhaps be crass if the site was mainly visited by the starving. But I doubt many of them get on the net very often. I feel that if it makes one obese westerner feel guilty whilst they eat half a cow for breakfast with fries and a diet coke to go then it is more subtle than would first appear.

Agree, Stormy, though I have to say it probably touches the hearts of the (relatively) poor amongst us, rather than those of the cow-and-coke-eaters.

Andrea, "Karma points" - What a great phrase. I don't think it really matters if you do it just to make yourself feel superior enough to help or if you're a genuine Mother Theresa. The guy in Africa, tucking into his bowl of rice, is grateful either way. There's nothing wrong in feeling good about doing good. Thanks for checking out the site everybody. Karl
