So Sherlock's back; what do we think of the modern take?

Personally I prefer the original, especially when portrayed by Jeremy Brett, he was perfect IMO.

I thought it was an interesting take on it, but I ultimately wasn't convinced. I too hold the Jeremy Brett version in very high regard, he seemed to just nail that part perfectly. There were just a number of things about this new version that didn't make a lot of sense, and made me wonder about how they were going to develop it. That said the performances were very good, and it isn't like I'm opposed to updating the stories. I will likely give it another chance when it returns, but it won't go down as a classic on current evidence.
Oooh, I think you're beng a bit harsh. I thought it was perfect Sunday night viewing - a bit silly, a bit intriguing, very well acted and beautifully shot. What more do you want? It surprised me just how well the stories updated and I think the writers, two of our best in Gatiss and Moffatt, demonstrated their skill by so doing. It does show just how stupid the BBC can be when they only commissioned three episodes in the first place and then chose to show them at 'get rid of the rubbish' time of year.
I didn't say I didn't enjoy it, I did. And you're right, commissioning three episodes was just stupid, the characters had very little time to grow or bed in, and just when you were getting used to them, it was all over. I just hope when it comes back they have a a decent run and a chance to take it somewhere interesting. I also hope they use Martin Freeman to his full potential, because he didn't have a lot to do in those three opening salvos.
I must admit that I loved it! The stories of Sherlock Holmes are my poorly reading of choice - ie. what I turn to when feeling under the weather - and I felt that the writers of the new series obviously loved the stories as much as I do. There are loads of little asides and conversations based on ambiguities in the original tales. Lovely writing and acting and made a Sherlock geek very happy. Oh, I do hope there's more to come...
It was filmed really well, like dramatic camera & all, and its clever how its been modernised, texting and all & Watson was brilliant! Sherlock is still an amazing character like dr who,( apparently they wanted to act eachothers character,) yet I like the old fashioned one on itv3 better, maybe because am oldfashioned lol? K
