Submarine by Joe Dunthorne aka spack

As the other thread ('Great Review') on Joe's book has done the self locking thing I thought I'd start a new one. I've started this whilst on holiday (I had to finish Crime and Punishment first). I had to stop reading it as I was keeping my wife awake by laughing hysterically - and then refusing to stop. I shall continue to read it in the lavatory and on the train to London. If it continues to have the same effect on me then things could get interesting.

If you haven't bought it yet - then do so!

Oh okay, until I re-read this thread I thought you were saying that 'Crime and Punishment' was making you laugh hysterically.... now that would be strange. I have the new(ish) Iain M Banks on the way first and after I'll read my first novel by an ABCer! Promise.

I recently finished Submarine. My girlfriend is reading it now. It's hard not to sound biased, obviously Joe is a fellow member of this site, and I've had the pleasure of seeing him perform once or... well, once. He was excellent live. But here's the thing: it's hard to find a criticism of Submarine. Always witty, frequently laugh-out-loud funny (I embarrassed myself slightly on the tube on two occasions) and such high quality of writing - the characters are wonderful. I liked Oliver Tate. A lot. I don't know if I was supposed to, but I did. So anyway, I don't care if I sound biased - it's a bloody great read. ENZO SAYS: Buy it. It's proper good, like a proper good book should be, and not in that way that when a mate writes something you say 'it's proper good', but in a way that a proper good book is proper good. Well done Joe! Enzo.. www.thedevilbetweenus.com
I thought it was really guffaw-on-the-tube funny and yet despite being so comical, Oliver is utterly believable. I second Enzo...buy this book. My copy is doing the rounds around our office! jude

i will check this out, met spack a few times back in the days when we had regular abctales evening - nice fellah, very pleased at his success
It is indeed all those things. I am currently reading it. Fish emailed me last night, 'spunk on the carpet'. Exactly! I thought. Just read the fairground bit which is not only funny but very touching. Drew

I loved this book. Recently I've been disappointed after reading books recommended by other people but this was so fresh and funny- I've recommended it to two of my friends.

Hey gang, Thanks for this lovely thread. Tony, Benzo, Jude, Fish, Drew and Niki - thanks so much for reading my book. I am chuffed. I got an email from a girl in Arizona who said she'd enjoyed it, which was great. And I guy who bought it on 5th Avenue in New York. Strange. Another short but nice review this weekend in the Sunday Times: http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/books/... Joe x
I bought another copy yesterday to give to my Mum for her 80th Birthday! I do hope that sales are going well - they should be.
