I could not resist a joust at the Politically Correct brigade. I wonder if they ever look at themselves and see how ridiculous they often are? Trouble is that they don't recognise themselves or refuse to take responsiblity for having created or used blatantP.C.
That should start a discussion!

CinCCo, Good topic for discussion. Much of what we write is in some way impacted by restraints, either our own or perceived society's. I am mindful of Alexander Solzhenitsin and other courageous writers who "told it like it is" and were imprisoned for their efforts, or worse. I think the notion of PC arises from a human beings innate desire to "blend in to his own society and be accepted by peers" The restrains are more self imposed than societal. Maybe writing or saying something will get you excluded from some club or soiree. The exclusion can also have professional ramifications. Society and work are much intertwined, whether this is acknowledged or not. It is usually the young who most scoff at convention. They have little to lose and have the hubris of the youthful immortal. We have this to thank them for.Every society needs satirists to poke its own inflated balloons. Jonatthan Swift was masterful in holding up established society ritual in humorous contempt. Still, what we see as folly can be another person's gospel. Who are we to say a custom is silly? The line crosses when personal freedoms are restrained for societal convenience. Then, we all have a duty to stand up and say "No, this is silly." Whether we have the couraage to do so when it costs us is another matter. Gandhi, Martin Luther King and scores of courageous people flouted convention to right some societal wrongs. Hopefully when our turn comes, we will show their courage. And if the hummor is just in fun for subjects not so serious, that helps us all too. Taking ourselves too seriously usually leads to silly behavior. Thanks for starting the thread.
