scriptwriting
Somebody recently asked me if I would do some writing for them. The person wants me to write them a script good enough to send to some director in America. He recorded his idea onto an audio tape which I listened to. The idea is ok, needs a bit of work on it, probably means spending a lot of time writing it. The thing is: he asked me how much it would cost, and because I have never done anything like this before - I said I wasn't sure what to charge. I ended up telling him I would do it for free, and in the unlikely event of the director in America accepting the script, he should pay me a percentage of whatever gets paid out.
I haven't committed myself to it yet, mainly because I've never written a script before, and I feel a little uneasy about doing it. I'am sure I can do it if I put my mind to it.
The other thing on my mind is. I am a little paranoid. If I spend hours writing out this script and then hand it over to him, what's to stop him, in the unlikely event of the script getting accepted, running off and not paying me my share? I mean there isn't much I can do in that situation. Not that I'am in it for the money, but still I don't want to spend hours working on something just to fill someone elses wallet. So I don't know whether to charge something now for my time or stick to what I've already told him and do it for free, getting a cut if the script is accepted.
I just feel uneasy charging him now, because like I say I've never written a script before, and I don't know what to charge anyway.
I know this is a bit of a strange one to drop on folks, but I would appreciate peoples opinions on this before I commit myself to it, and definately need some help and advice. Your all people whom I trust and most of you have been in the writing game longer than me.
I would appreciate any wisdom anyone has to share.
