Women's Tennis & Prize Money.

Having just watched Justin Henin demolish Ana Wotzername in slightly over an hour, and trouser £700,000 in the so doing, at The French Open, why oh why oh why can't they play the best of 5 sets? It can't be that they are so feeble, can it? And if they are then why are they on parity with men? I'm thinking Paula Radcliffe here who could probably run most men into, well, the gutter. Come on you feminists, let's have the best of five sets at Wimbledon, and get some excitement back into the women's game. Because quite frankly, today's final at Roland Garros was beyond a joke.

It does seem a bit crazy. I'm all for equality between the genders and all that, but surely it should be relative to the amount of effort put in? It's a bit like women wanting equal pay for the same job, but where women only work for half the hours... (PS. on a slight aside, I heard recently that John McEnroe still maintains he could beat any female tennis player - what say we start the campaign to make him put his money where his mouth is?!) pe ps oid ... Wasn't there a fuss about this last year? I seem to recall some bloke on the radio putting it rather succinctly that, when as many people pay to see women's tennis as pay to see men's, then prize money will probably be equitable. It has nothing to do with the amount of effort put in, after all, isn't the highest paid sportsman in the world a bloody golfer!

"It can't be that they are so feeble, can it? And if they are then why are they on parity with men?" I think it would be strange if the position is really that top women players are physically incapable of playing five set matches. Female footballers play for the same length of time as men. It could be - I don't know - that because women are less likely to have big serves and serve loads of aces, a set in a women's match generally takes longer than a set in a men's match.

The Womens Tennis Federation say that they'd be only too happy to play the best of 5 sets, so why not? Venus Williams has served at 125mph

I agree - but you wouldn't want more of the dross that Ivanovic served up against Henin. It was a blessed relief that it finished in an hour.
As my other half just mentioned, apparently women tennis players would generally be happy to play five sets, but, in the case of Wimbledon, for example, it's simply down to time... There isn't time, during the Wimbledon fortnight for women to play five set matches as well as men... Anyone know if this is definitely the case? pe ps oid ... What is "The Art of Tea"? ...
