the comparison with slavery doesn't make sense make sense of it and i'll say it makes sense
course it makes sense. Silly! The landlord at my local is pissed-off. He's thinking about staging a revolt. Actually, you know what - it's a fooking good thing - this standing outside for a ciggy. I enjoyed the intimate company of two supple feline beauties on saturday night. I made bonds with at least 12 people with whom I've never conversed with. I love it! And - I love the getting up and wandering about bit of it, too. It kinda breaks up the evening - skulking here and there! Nice experience. I witnessed only one fight...between two fat ladies. It was all over within a couple o tokes! ;) When the power of love overcomes the love of power, we'll find peace. - Jimi Hendrix

That's all very "glass-is-half-full" of you, Yan! ;) ... the comparison with slavery doesn't make sense make sense of it and i'll say it makes sense Just to clarify... I'm not saying (unless someone puts up a good argument otherwise) that smoking is as bad as slavery. I'm saying that we may have a similar movement of social conscience from acceptability to, as Yan said, the... "wow! Did they really do that? Terrible biscuits!!" factor. ... okay? pe ps oid Blogs! The All New Pepsoid the Second!

are you saying smoking is 'bad' at all?

Well, you could argue that the tobacco plantations were part-funded by slavery, so in that respect, yes it is bad...
so were tea plantations, is drinking tea bad? (I'm hoping not)

smoking is like slavery in the sense that no-one who is slave to an addiction is free.
I'm addicted to tea.

Is smoking "bad"...? Now there's a big one! I suppose in and of itself, one cannot reasonably say that smoking is "bad" - presuming that by "bad," we mean some kind of reference to the concept of "evil." The issue of guns has been raised above... are guns "bad"/"evil"? They aren't living, they don't have intentions (probably!), but the intention behind them is to kill - or at least wound. If the intention behind the creation of something is to cause harm, can the thing itself be said to be "evil"? Can one even suggest that "knowingly causing harm" or "knowingly creating something intended to cause harm" is evil? What if one causes harm to one person in order to save another, or to save numerous people? - which can lead onto the question of "just wars"... but as that's such a potentially enormous tangent, I shall not, in this instance, go there! Back to smoking then... cigarettes (and other vessels creating for the inhalation of tobacco and similar substances) were not created with the intention of causing harm. Moreover, they were created with the intention of giving pleasure. The fact that they do (ostensibly) cause harm - to the user and others in the vicinity - is, perhaps, an unintentional side effect. However... it has been some time since we have "known" that cigarettes cause harm (of one form or another), so are present-day creators of ciggies "bad," on account of the fact that, although one could probably not say they create their product with the sole intention of causing harm, they nevertheless create it in the full knowledge that it will (most likely) cause harm (of one form or another)? Cigarettes are objects. They, like guns, have no intention (there is perhaps some line of philosophical reasoning that says anything which has some sort of imbued purpose has an intention, but again... big tangent!). So cigarettes are neither "good" nor "bad"... They are, however, "bad"/"unhealthy" (can we really, these days, deny, that this is, is some sense, true?)... but I don't reckon this is what you meant, is it, Maddan...?? pe ps oid Blogs! The All New Pepsoid the Second!

Hmm, upon a re-reading of comments prior to mine, I have noticed that Maddan asked if smoking is "bad," not if cigarettes are bad... a subtle distinction... and one I may have to come back to! pe ps oid Blogs! "the art of tea" "that's an odd courgette"

Peeps you tit! Cigarette manufacturers make cigarettes to make money, and lots of it, for their company and shareholders. And if people become addicted - brilliant!

It is a great way to socialise - this smoking outside thing. I mean - as soon as you walk through that door, you both share something in common. It's just a matter of lighting up, getting the grunts and tuts out of the way, and you've made a new friend. And you're both always that little bit more pissed each time you meet during the evening - so the relaltionship kinda meets new levels each time. I like it! Smoking is cool. Fact.

http://www.metro.co.uk/news/article.html?in_article_id=56656&in_page_id=34 huzzah!!! smokers flock to stoke - someone forgot to fill a form in - smoking still going on in pubs!! oh and while i'm at it http://www.bmj.com/archive/7070nd2.htm the nazis were the first to ban smoking
Well Styx, obviously I know ciggie-makers do it to make money! But as I said above... "...are present-day creators of ciggies "bad," on account of the fact that, although one could probably not say they create their product with the sole intention of causing harm, they nevertheless create it in the full knowledge that it will (most likely) cause harm (of one form or another)?" - their intention is not to cause harm, but, in a moral/philosophical sense, are they "bad"(/"evil") for creating these things knowing they will cause harm...?? So no titteth I!! pe ps oid Blogs! "the art of tea" "that's an odd courgette"

Christ! I'm suffering nicotine withdrawals. I passed about 48 pubs on the way back from a meeting. I had to seek refuge in a pub just to get some fresh air!

:#) Had a right old lark of it outside a club last night. Someone had brought one of them little playstations out..so we had a little smoker's gaming tournament. cool bics. ;) When the power of love overcomes the love of power, we'll find peace. - Jimi Hendrix

Hurrah for "them little playstations"!! (I presume you mean a PSP, Yan... don't pretend you didn't know this!... ;)...) BTW, while we're on the subject, anyone here seen Snakes on a Plane? And noticed how it was ultimately PlayStation which saved the day? Which is rock solid proof that PlayStation is good!!! ;) ;) :))))) pe ps oid Blogs! "the art of tea" "that's an odd courgette"

cuz you know, you can't have smoking around when you're getting drunk of your ass in a pub. now, in resteraunts I understand, but I don't think they should keep smokers out of bars. course it's dif here in america, pretty sure they still have a smoking area in some resteraunts here.

Give me the beat boys and free my soul! I wanna getta lost in ya rock n' roll and drift away. Drift away...

yep..I was a cm outside a designated smoking area at seaworld and a woman was that mad at me that I thought she was gunna flatten me with her motorised wheelchair. I'm sure they all pile into them things so they can queue-hop for rides... ahh..psp..that's it. Couldn't remember...actually, it belonged to a kid, but his dad nabbed it off him, lol. I found smoking to be so much less tolerated in bushdom. I also found there be an abundance of morbidly obese children. Which is a bit weird. Each to their own poison, i suppose ;) When the power of love overcomes the love of power, we'll find peace. - Jimi Hendrix

i thought it was a crayon. A dip of the lip in any tea is a heart warming experience. It's deffo something I'd have to take to a desert island. haha..that reminds me...my indian friend, who runs a restaurant - he put "desert" on his menu.
