Update: Paul Chappell (FTSE100/Footsie)

Hello all, just thought I'd let you know that, following Paul's suicide on 10th July 2013 and with permission from Paul's brother, we are collating his work with a view to publishing in paperback, probably through UKA Press (the publishing arm of UKAuthors).

The working title is 'The Sighs of a Mouse and Other Stories' and we aim to raise awareness of mental health issues everywhere, but particularly in the UK. If any of you have any suggestions as to how this can be better achieved, we'd love to hear from you.

I know you'll all wish us well with this project and of course I'll keep you regularly updated.

Great idea. Let me know if I can help in any way.
Paul's work was some of the best I've seen on this site. Without question, he was the most witty and zany contributor. Since his death, I have often wondered whether Abctales might publish his stories, mostly as a mark of respect for his behind-the-scenes work but more importantly because Paul was an Abctales man through and through. While his relationship with Tony may have ended acrimoniously, I'd be surprised if the idea hadn't crossed his mind too, but perhaps he is allowing for a respectful time after Paul's passing away.

Thanks, Ewan and Blighters. Ewan, I will certainly take you up on your kind offer if I need to! Blighters, Paul also had quite a lot of word on UKA, although admittedly, not as much as he had on ABC. However, I'm very sorry to say this, but Paul did not want ABC to publish his work and his brother (who now owns copyright to his work) is more than happy for UKA Press to do so, if we decide to. I was very close to Paul and am trying to follow his wishes as much as I am able to. He specifically asked me not to publish Sighs on ABC - just a notice with a link through so that people who cared for him here, were able to read his last words. I apologise, but am just following Paul's wishes, as with the emails he asked me to send to various people after his death. http://www.ukauthors.com
I stand corrected, Andrea, and I respect Paul's wishes wholeheartedly. Good luck with the project. Please feel free to call upon me for any help you may need with its publishing.

Thank you very much, Blighters, that's very kind of you. http://www.ukauthors.com
There is little I can offer in the way of help but I would like to wish you well with the project as I thought he was a very talented and quirky writer and I am deeply saddened by his loss. Moya

Thank you, Moya, I appreciate it, and I know Paul would too. http://www.ukauthors.com
A very beautiful idea, Andrea. I hope it does well. Paul may have fallen foul of M.I.N.D. I don't know, but if not, have you contacted them about this project? They might help to bring these problems into the media, and maybe improve the way they are dealt with in the UK. Good luck Keith

new What! a shock for all of us. I haven't been on here lately. His work I have read so much, talent had. On Abctales was great to read. I wish you all the best. With the project. May he R.I.P. cavalcaderl julie
And I too wish you well with the project. We will do all we can to help to promote the book.
Thank you all. Yes, when the time comes, any help with promo would be much appreciated. http://www.ukauthors.com
Thought some of you guys might like to read this: Write for Footsie http://ukauthors.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=30928

Andrea, I only heard about Paul's sad death yesterday.

He helped me in my own battle with periodic depression with his own writing on depression, as I'm sure he did many others.

I'm delighted to hear that you are putting together some of his fantastic work.

I think it may be valuable to indicate the help, perhaps unknowingly on his part,  that he gave his readers in this way, especially if you are aiming to help promote mental health awareness and support.

If you need any comment(s) or help on this publication I would be very happy to contribute.

Claire

I'm so sorry, Pixie, I must have missed this. Thank you for your kind words and offer of help - I appreciate it. Aiming to help promote mental health awareness and support is exactly what I hope to do, and what Paul would have wanted.

Hi guys, a quick update re Paul Chappells The Sighs of a Mouse.

I'm awaitng reviews from several mental health organisations as well as a well-known author/physician. I'd like to get their (abbreviated) quotes on the back cover, and the full quotes, of course, on the  UKA Press site and online (Amazon etc). Nonetheless, I am hoping to get the ms sent to the printer by mid-October at the latest.

I anyone can assist, or have any ideas re targeting mental health orgs in the UK, your help would be much appreciated. Perhaps Mark Brown (an ex-ABC'er), who I knew in another lifetime and has his site here: http://www.socialspider.com/ might be able to help.

ABC Tales (and especially Tony) has always been hugely supportive of minorities, especially the homeless and disenfranchised. I'm hoping they will support this project and give any help they are able to.

PS. Where is the spellcheck on this new forum? :)

Thanks very much, BB, that's an excellent idea!

Andrea, Ruby Wax might also provide some insight.

Thanks, Luigi - I'll look into her (so to speak :)). I've already written to Stephen Fry. We'll see...

Samaritans? No idea if he ever spoke to them or what he thought of them.

Thanks very much, AT, I'll look into it (although I don't really think Paul was a Samaritans kind of guy :))

Meanwhile, I've also written to Ruby Wax (thanks, Luigi), Oliver Sacks and Terry Pratchett.

Just to let you guys know that I sent Paul's Sighs of a Mouse off to print this morning. As long as I haven't mucked anything up, it should start appearing online (Amazon etc) in about a week. I'll keep you posted and provide links when they appear.

Again, if anyone has any ideas as to how we can use Paul's experience to highlight mental health issues in the UK, please do contact me.

Thanks very much MissU. I signed off the proof this morning, so copies should be available in about 7 days. I'll keep you posted of course.
