Dying to know...
When entering competitions, does work posted on the abctales site count as having been published?

And by 'competitions' I am not referring to the sites own comps but ones in the world in general. If we enter a competition elsewhere, does having a piece of work posted on abctales mena it has been 'published'?

Technically, yes.
But the people running competitions are not generally going spend their time trawling the internet checking whether each individual entry to their competitions has been published online.
I'd risk it unless the competition rules specifically say 'should not have been previously published online' or something similar.
I would take it off the site at the point you enter the competition, though.
