Saltwater - book of stories by ashb

Hi

I am working really hard right now on a project to publish a book of stories, some of which have been road-tested on ABCtales.com The project has been over 70% funded, but if I do not achieve the remaining funds in the next few days I will not receive the amounts fundraised so far... was just hoping one or two of you might consider supporting it.

Sorry, but I honestly can't see why you would need €1200 in funds to produce an e-book of shorts (which you can do for free). I know you state it's for editing, design, etc, but even so... http://www.ukauthors.com
I'm not one for self publishing. Back in the day they called it vanity publishing. If its good enough and it is destined to be published then send it off to an agent.

Beg to disagree, grover. Back in the day it was very respectable. Or perhaps these guys weren't 'good enough'? Deepak Chopra Gertrude Stein Zane Grey Upton Sinclair Carl Sandburg Ezra Pound Mark Twain Edgar Rice Burroughs Stephen Crane Bernard Shaw Anais Nin Thomas Paine Virginia Wolff e.e. Cummings Edgar Allen Poe Rudyard Kipling Henry David Thoreau Benjamin Franklin Walt Whitman Alexandre Dumas William E.B. DuBois Beatrix Potter and many more... http://www.ukauthors.com
Whatever, personally I'd never buy something self published. And I'm talking modern day back in the day.

And to add that it's easy to do it now at very little cost so anyone can do it. As for needing 1200 quid, it's a scam.

For anyone reading this with an open mind, my project is NOT a scam - the comment above is really quite offensive. I wish to pay a designer, typesetter, photographer and editor a reasonable fee for their work (below market rate in some cases). The person who made the comments is of the opinion I should do that work myself but I'n not a designer or photographer, and although I have worked as a editor I don't have the distance to be the best editor of my own writing. Quite apart form the fact it is my project not his! €1200 euro (CURRENT RATES) = UK£956 DESIGN FEES $500 / £400 EDITING FEES $500 / £400 PHOTO FEE $100 / £80 FUNDIT FEES 8% $96 / £77 Andrea thanks for the information about early examples of self-publishing and the huge list of self-published authors, some of whom I did not know of. Thought Daniel Defoe was among them (for Crusoe) but maybe not? Also did not know about Beatrix Potter - fascinating. Just to add that at last count 4 of the 12 stories in SaltWater have won or been shortlisted for short fiction prizes. My sincere thanks to the many writers and others who have helped co-fund this project by advance buying copies and having faith in me to produce the work, and I hope you enjoy reading it.

I too think that the derogatory comments are completely unjustified. Self publishing is an excellent way forward for new writers and ashb's expenditure is entirely reasonable. I do ask you to desist from making comments like 'it's a scam' without thinking things through. It clearly isn't and I am appalled at such a comment. I will now support this scheme personally as I feel upset and annoyed on ash's behalf over this treatment.
Thanks so much, really appreciate the support and backing... hope you enjoy reading SALTWATER. Also I just realized I should have used Euros where I had dollar signs.

I have to say, i agree with Grover. If a real publisher is not interesed, then leave it alone. I smell a scam. I have seen it all before.

Thanks for the support guys. ABCTalers who are serious about their work and regularly write and publish short stories in anthologies and magazines, as I do, know exactly how interested UK publishers (and agents) tend to be in new short fiction writers. It's all "love your writing, but can you send us a novel" ;)

But why on earth would you cough up, for example, 80 quid for an image? There are hundreds of thousands of free ones, or thousands more for as little as a fiver. All you need to do is some research. Also, why not try the Indie route? There are hundreds of small publishers who specialise in e-books (BeWrite spring to mind - http://www.bewrite.net/ but there are many more)and, if accepted, edit, design cover, promote etc, at no cost to the author. http://www.ukauthors.com
Andrea thanks for these suggestions, perhaps they'll be useful to others, or to me if I ever do this again. I guess what I feel the need to do is to make this my project my own. To call the shots and yeah, if mistakes are made, at least they'll be mine. Anyway while grateful for the interest people have displayed, the book's still one story short, so will have to leave it there for now. Busy few weeks coming up, with some day job stuff to do as well as the book... Can always pop back at some later date for a post mortem ;)

Andrea i think you are contradicting yourself. If your work is good enough then i am sure it will be published. Grow up and leave Grover alone. Self publishing is very vain.

Contradicting myself? How? And my reply to grover was perfectly polite. I merely pointed out that many highly respected authors have gone down the self-publishing route, and gave him some examples. http://www.ukauthors.com http://www.ukapress.com
Example's now? I smell desperation
