Wet Rot

First there were water spots, peripheral problems

before an unmistakeable odour which hung

around them and which friends noticed.

Eventually, the structure weakened

to such an extent that they both

fell through the floorboards

finding themselves flailing

in plaster and splinters,

blaming one another

for not noticing

sooner.

I really love this. I like the part 'which friends noticed'. So very accurate in your description of a relationship breaking down.

Great metaphor, Ben. Love the structure, too. Being slow, it took me a couple of reads to get it. But that's just me. I was busy enjoying the aesthetic. Enjoyed muchly.

I love the way it is structured
