SWEET MEMORIES

Ben is in the garden
hard of hearing
weeding and pruning
the sun is going down
He had already cut
the hollyhocks
passion flowers
with a pair of shears
'Winnie his wife
shouts out!
"your memory swings like
a pendulum clock"
backwards and foreward
sometimes a bit bloody slow"
Ben thought he heard her say
"bring in the parrots"
but Winnie asked for carrots
"come in for your shower”
he went in carrying
sweet peas and all kinds of flowers
little Polly ran into her wendy house
"mummy! Mummy!
hear comes uncle Tom
please! can he stay for tea?
tell me
stories and tales
of down by the river
how the fishing line
caught in his hair.
Sing me a song.
"one, two, three four five,
once he caught a fish alive,
six, seven, eight nine ten
then he let it go again
why? did you let him go
because he bit my finger so
which finger did he bite
my little finger on the right"
"we will see" mummy replied
"come and get ready”
Ben is in the shower,
brushes his moustache,
changes into fresh clothes,
enters the room
forgetting he has asked ‘Molly
proper looking dolly
Ben holding in his hand a rose
her eye’s are sparkling like a star
he starts calling her a floozie
a second-hand rose
Molly has parked her pink
cadillac car with
large false eyelashes
over the headlights
everyone is sitting at the table
Polly’s dad Harry
works as a mechanic
at the garage
who should peer around the door
but the vicar ‘Gabriel’
in his white collar and flowing robe
wearing shiny black shoes
he seats himself with the family
and grabs the only prawn sandwich
smiles to himself as he slips
an edible rice paper prayer list into it
Polly the little girl
with golden curls
stuck her tongue
out to the vicar
Grace begins
lettuce us be trooly thankful
for the big sleep,
thank you Lord for everything,
Amen, and bless you all
"ooh! I’ve been
at the red wine again."
