A Golden Wedding Celebration Poem
Going for Gold!
Looking back over these past fifty years
There’s been much laughter sometimes even tears
Considering all the mad things we’ve done -
What do we care - it’s been fifty years of fun!
We’ve had our share of struggles up and down,
Me being the worrier, you the clown,
But we’ve stuck together through them all,
Never letting pride come before a fall!
And if we’ve had a bit of a ding dong,
We never hold a grudge that would be wrong,
Best to forgive then cast it from one’s mind,
To try to cause pain would just be unkind.
I know you agree, well…I think you do,
Love freely given so constant and true,
Supports us and keeps all our troubles at bay.
But what is it that makes love want to stay?
When we wed…No, not fifty years ago?
Time’s passed so fast not in the least bit slow.
Would vows made then run to their full extent -
Seems time invested has been time well spent!
I cannot, in public, speak from my heart,
That same heart says we cannot live apart
Nothing can dismantle our love so true
Death will die before I would part from you!
My shy heart cannot speak of love out loud
Though in company of a friendly crowd
But this poem is here for the world to see
Now they know I love you and you love me!

With grateful thanks to all the people who so generously helped me with this. I think I have taken little bits from everyone but I think it is still essentially my poem. I don't know if it scans but I think I will need time to develop an ear as well as studying the subject a bit more. Helvigo has recommended a book which I intend to get and Stan directed me to a site some time ago and I printed off a sheet which gives almost a lesson in scansion. But still I struggle on!
I hope any reader will think it is an improvement.

Congratulations on sorting out what everyone said, but most of all for a lovely poem that reads well, and says wonderful things about your years of marriage and celebration. I'm sure your husband and others will delight in it. Rhiannon

Hello Rhiannonw,
Thank you I hope you think it is an improvement. As you can see I used a lot of your suggestions because they were small alterations that made a big difference so thank you for your time and the trouble you took to help me.

This is absolutely beautiful Moya. I liked the
original, but this one is even better.
I can hear you reading this out loud, and I hope
all your celebrations go really well.
I'm sure everyone will adore hearing your words,
especially your husband.
Cheerz! to you and raise your glass to a poem

Hello Jenny,
I replied to your lovely comment earlier but lost the connection. Anyway, I thank you for it and I am so pleased you thought it is an improvement. I still don't know if it scans but I shall have to study more poetry and I am going to buy the book Helvigo recommended and I already have something I printed off a site that Stan recommended to me some time ago. I don't think I will be brave enough to read it out but as we are putting up photos taken over different periods of our life as well as our wedding photos I thought I would put it up with them and then guests can either read it or not. I don't really like alcohol but I think I might just have a tipple if I see anyone reading it.
Thanks once again, Jenny,
Moya

Moya, if I was an old softy I would have a lump in my thoat after reading this. But, I'm not an old softy, I've just got the start of a heavy cold and that makes your throat sore and your eyes water a bit!
Denzella | June 18, 2012 - 21:22
Hello Julie,
Thank you for reading and your kind comments. Yes, I will put up photos so that people can see how handsome my husband was when he was young and although, like with me, the ravages of time have had an effect he is still handsome on the inside.
What strikes me is in the photos how eager he looks to be going like a lamb to the slaughter.
Thank you for your good wishes.

Aaah, the old cold routine, eh?
There must be something on the market that can cure 'old softy's.' But don't buy it we like you just the way you are!

new DenZella
Hi! Moya, absolutley true! Not the age of wearing
and tearing, what comes or remains from the inside.
Had an waful week, mine has large diary, too heavy lift.
Then put list on wall, as Captain of snooker! all the week doing Bowls, and snooker friday right!
Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday Friday! times etc;
Julie's day from say 1-5pm! at command. I had singing go,two places, one hour only two days!
But he never skaed? I was furious. Previous maybe like to come Yok; if it is set up! stay over somewhere AbcTales if takes place,no didn't want go.
Now big row, taken Thursday off Bowls, told them. I am literally going potty! Maybe it is his heart pills and cholestrol, sure something not quite right!
Rainy but got "Jazz" in,Ray's back shopping. My poor mind! So sod him when he is ready! So annoying fix anything. Oh! well sun is peeping through.
10 years younger than me,if only known, what I know now.
Keep smiling. A Anniversary coming up? not interested
at all, can't win in any way! Just keep up singing for
pleasure! Like hardly exist, that's another story.
We all have different things in life! to contend with, don't we.
take care.

Hello Julie,
You sound proper fed up! Weather not helping with all this rain. Never mind the sun will come out again one day and you will smile again too. Nothing is forever...good things or bad things. And as for men, sometimes there's just no living with them. But as I always say when friends are fed up with their partners, husbands etc "Dogs are for life...men can be just for Christmas!" Though not in my case. I know I am lucky because I got a good one who is cheerful, kind and I was going to say considerate but actually that's not quite right because he can be a bit thoughtless at times. But no one is perfect we are all flawed in some way. I do hope if York comes off that you do come because it would be lovely to meet you.
Julie, keep singing because that and "Jazz" seem to bring you happiness and God knows we all need some of that.
Take care,
Moya

Just right. some of us never have (and now never will) have what you've had. I can't imagine not running when it gets hard. You have my utmost respect and admiration. Well done.
