A Tribute to Terry!

Our friend Terry is not how he once was
His limbs no longer support him because
Huntingdon’s like a thief in the night
Has stolen all movement and that’s not right
Strong limbs are now terribly distorted
His eyes look haunted and face contorted

He sits staring at photos on the wall
And thinks how long before I get the call
He wants to give up what’s left of his life
So that he can be once more with his wife
My heart cries out to see his pain
And wanting to be with Sylvia again

I can’t believe it is too big a task
Or, is it not allowed even to ask
To be given a merciful release
From a pain filled life that needs to cease
I’d like to think of him free from his pain
And happy once more with Sylvia again

She smiles down from everywhere in this place
And ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’
The love song he chose for her funeral
Brings back the memory of her burial
Now overtaken by his own disease
Will no one listen to his heartfelt pleas…

Well, you are listening certainly and suffering in the watching; and if he is praying, be sure God hears. We can't see the reason for delays, but we don't see everything, do we, and if we were in charge, what things might get missed that are beyond our knowledge. I pray he won't only see Sylvia, but even more wonderful the face of a welcoming Saviour who had supported him, but now draws him near.
The title you've chosen says a lot for his handling of his suffering; the 'teaser'– "The tragedy of a life not wanted" I suppose is referring to his desire to leave it now: maybe it is just a little longer, – maybe he'll even be able to encourage others during this short wait.

How sad. A terrible dilemma emotionally expressed in your poem Moya. Brought tears to my eyes. No-one should suffer like this. A powerful piece.

was a dear, man hardly could put one foot in front the other, head net low walk, and stick think! maybe a fag!
Two women went by,know one, stopped see needed touch!

I have seen so much and experienced myself too,but in giving we recieve.
take care!
Have a cool weekend. phew!

Hello Rhiannonw,

Thank you so much for reading and commenting on this poem. I'm afraid I don't have the same conviction that you have although I do believe in a God, it's just religion, all religions, that I have an issue with. But I hope when he does see his Sylvia again he will also see a welcoming Saviour.Yes, the title does refer to the brave way he has dealt with this horrible disease but it hasn't been a little wait. It has gone on for a long time and all the while he only wanted to be with his Sylvia. He came home from Australia as his illness progressed so that he would be near to where she was buried when his time came.

Thank you for reading and giving such a compassionate response.

Hello Linda,

Thank you for reading and commenting on this poem as it is one very dear to my heart not because of any technical style but because over the years I have seen Terry's suffering and know how devastated he was to lose his Sylvia at only fifty six. She was my best friend and I thought the world of them both.

Thanks once again for the read and comment.

Hello dear Julie,

I was feeling a bit sad when I started to reply to comments about this poem not because of the comments but because I kept picturing Terry alone in his flat waiting for God! But your kind words have lifted my spirits no end so thank you for that. 'In giving we receive' well I certainly hope you receive because
you do always seem to be giving.

Thank you,

Moya

So heart breaking, Moya. I wish there was an easy answer to dilemmas such as this. Must not have been easy to write. That's what i love about writing, I think it helps us to deal better with life's unexpected twists. You handled the subject beautifully.

Rich

Denzella | August 1, 2012 - 17:17

Hello hudsonmoon,

Thank you for reading this poem and for your kind comments. This couple, Sylvia and Terry used to own the village shop and they were such fun people. Then they hit some problems and so came to live with us for the whole of one summer and that cemented our friendship. The weather that year was amazing and we had a great time with them. It is why seeing Terry as he is now is so utterly heartbreaking and Sylvia was lost to Terry and to us some time ago.

You are right though about the writing it does somehow help us to deal with the ups and downs of life.

Sorry about writing a book but when it comes to comments my attitude seems to be why write one word when ten will do!

Anyway, Thank you, Rich,

Moya

Hi Moya,

I think you've written this so well, I can
see it was a hard piece to write.

Can't imagine suffering like this man, trying
to carry on each day, knowing your health is
never going to be the same.

It's one of those situations that is so hard
to actually understand fully until it happens,
but I hope that Terry can find his peace soon.

Jenny.

Denzella | August 1, 2012 - 18:47

Hello Jenny,

Thank you for reading and commenting on this poem and yes it was hard to write but as hudsonmoon says writing somehow makes dealing with life's ups and downs just that little bit easier.

My own way of dealing with sad things once I have managed to write about them is to change direction completely and try to write something that makes me laugh even if I am the only one that finds it funny!

But thank you once again, Jenny

Hiya Moya, one of my faourite songs to sing at the start or end of the night in karaoke is The First Time. It's a beautiful song and I can well imagine it bringing a tear to people's eyes at a funeral. I make people cry every time I sing it, but if you heard me you'd realise it's not for the right reasons ;-)

A beautiful poem. I hope he gets back to Sylvia soon. This is so beautiful and your sympathy cries off the page. lovely.

Denzella | August 1, 2012 - 19:18

Hello Sooz,

How nice of you to read and comment on my poem. I don't believe a word of it when you say your singing brings a tear for all the wrong reasons.

If you like to sing that song then I can't imagine anyone would dare to sing such lovely words with an ugly voice. (To paraphrase Maureen Lipman in Educating Rita)

Got some catching up to do with your work and quite a few others but will get there

Parson Thru | August 22, 2012 - 23:02

So sorry to read of this sad situation Moya. It does throw up that question of whether there is any meaning to all this or are we just randomly living through joy and suffering. One thing certain is that he will be glad of your friendship.

Denzella | August 23, 2012 - 06:55

Hello Parson Thru,

Thank you for reading and commenting on my poem. Yes life can be hard but it can also have joy in it. When Sylvia was alive there was a lot of laughter and joy although Terry was even then showing symptoms but none of us knew.

Thanks once again for reading.
