THE MANSION

from the ABC set MELANCHOLIA

I'll build myself a mansion to shield me from the rains,
To guard me from their cruel words and all their worldly pains;
I'll build it out of loneliness, I'll build it out of sorrow;
And it shall be a haven, tomorrow and tomorrow.

*

I'l build myself a mansion to hide me from their gaze;
To keep me from their ceaseless race, their hapless wanton ways;
I'll build it out of solitude, I'll build it out of sorrow;
And it shall be a haven, tomorrow and tomorrow.

*

I built myself a mansion to shield me from the world,
And round it raged both war and greed as storms and tempests swirled;
I built it out of all my dreams, with secret hopes designed -
And it became a prison to bind my restless mind.

And it shall be a prison, tomorrow and tomorrow.

This is written very well, and perceptive thought: escape and isolation seem attractive when so much is disturbing and trouble, but we do need helpful companionship! Rhiannon
