NECTAR IN A SIEVE

I know tomorrow never comes
However long that I may live;
So drink to me with all your heart
The amber nectar from a sieve.
I had a husband long ago,
My own love I was happy with;
He sang me songs like evening stars -
But he was nectar in a sieve.
- - - There is no 'Land of Lost Content',
- - - No endless source of precious things;
- - - No cask of gold at rainbow's end,
- - - Nor ancient race with angel wings.
I had a pretty cat I loved,
Her heart was all that she could give;
I carry her sweet life in me -
For she was nectar in a sieve.
And what of Gods beyond the sky?
For all the eons they must live
They watch creations come and go,
Yet give us nectar in a sieve.
- - - There is no place of 'Heart's Desire',
- - - Or secret realms where fairies climb;
- - - No answers for the searching mind,
- - - No magic portals back through Time.
The time that kills me every day
Is all that I have left to live;
So drink to me with all your heart
For life is nectar in a sieve.
- - - And drink to me with all your heart -
- - - Our lives are nectar in a sieve.
