We live in this city
but our hearts belong
to somewhere else.
Slumped in our bedsit
forgotten by the world
two sad little astronauts
sucking memories
from a pipe.
Months ago we had hopes
and dreams and we stroked
each other’s feet but now
an empty balloon
shrivels inside my chest
a dead thing that still
asphyxiates progress.
I’m going to Amsterdam
all by myself
and I look forward
to doing something without you.
I’ll dye my hair blue and get a
tattoo, a Heidegger quote, the one
about death because death is the only
thing that’s truly my own.
Deep down in the belly of the
city I’ll find someone who is less
fucked in the head and he’ll tell
me I’m beautiful
despite everything.

Look no further, Maggy! You are beautiful despite everything and you are beautiful because of everything.

Agreed Blighters. What a beautiful mind. Really touching Maggy. And I like that Heidegger quote. I know what you / he mean. We go there alone. Take care. Just read it again. It's beautiful. Like the astronauts a lot.

love this. can't pick a favourite line 'cause it's all brilliant. wish I could have written it, so glad you did, it's sublime :D

Full disclosure - I liked this so much that this weekend I saw myself pulling it up from my smartphone in a bar, because I thought it's what I needed to hear (read) ... and that was probably the sixth or seventh time I'd studied it.
I love your work.

You do feelings so well Maggy. Reading your poems is like recalling a place I've been many years ago, more than once, and am right back there again. Whether or not I have is not the point - it's how you communicate those feelings to the reader. Not expressing myself too well today - I'll leave that to you.
Sooz006 | May 8, 2012 - 16:51
This piece really connected with me because I'm at exactly the same point. I am ready to run (again) I have somewhere to run to. I have a place to live organised and a job in a pub until I get on my feet and take stock, but my home is comfortable and I fear leaving him alone and hurting him, despite being in a sickening controlling situation that everybody has told me to get out of.
I've already done the tattoos and uprooted myself before. But the older you get, the scarier it is the thought of walking out with nothing and re-building again! So I procrastinate and garden.
Loved this poem because it made me go, ouch!

The thing about the Heidegger's quote tatoo is gold, trully gold.
Your poem made me heartbroken again, but everything is good.
Excelsior!

If I was 35 years younger and not in love with my wife I'd be in Amsterdam in a heartbeat draping my overcoat over mud puddles. But since none of that is ever going to happen, I will simply tell you how beautiful you are. The skin deep you. The one that writes this achingly beautiful stuff.

- love this stanza, Maggy! This is gritty and raw, but despite everything I still feel an overwhelming sense of hope. Truly beautiful.

Hello! I think all has mainly been said.
Well done on the cherry! and Facebook Twitter
and Pick of the day.
Course your beautiful, but beauty comes from within.
You have that gift writing, to draw the reader in.
So perfectly done! With all you type and write always. I hope most of poem isn't true!
As I have been taken in by it? But it is under Love.
Your eyes are like stars that shine
lips like cherry wine
hair that looks like gold
you will never grow old
The smile that lights up the room
write like you do
A heart that beats fast
the poems are world class
Not quite how started it.
change it! If you like!
take care.

Strong sense of potential personal implosion, but with a very dry, wry humour. Lightest balance, as it should be, between tragi/comic. Good one!
all the best lena xx

"an empty balloon
shrivels inside my chest"
This is a recurring image in your poetry, but every time you manage to clothe it in new colours... That takes some genius.
Loved it. Well done.
Nathan.
