"The thought of you stayed too late in my head..."
- Carol Ann Duffy
I'm good at brooding. Seriously,
no one can brood quite like me -
when I'm sat on a nameless bench
and the sky is just as moody.
Me and the weather - we're
in this together. Can always
complement each other.
Smoking is helpful when you're brooding -
especially when it's on the sly...
(My friends don't know, you see.)
Music is also good; headphones in,
world off. Keane, Bon Iver, The Killers -
that old 'list', remember?
The best time to brood is dusk,
or early morning - that's when
the cathedral glows, quite golden,
in the dusty, orange light.
Such light is held by the rusty
leaves of the trees that mourn
the passing of the River Wear.
Now, where was I? Oh yes -
brooding. Look... I'll admit,
sometimes, I do forget.
But when I remember,
oh boy do I remember!
I feel as if I'm wandering
through a hall of mirrors, keep
running into your reflection –
and I'm turning, spinning...
But can't get away from you.
For everyone else,
I wear a mask; I laugh
when Ryan does
his Mr Rochester impression,
and smile when Rose
mocks Hardy with a
melodramatic rendition
of 'The Voice'.
I revel in their
absolute ignorance of you.
Let it infect me, trying to kid
myself that I'm as blind
to your existence as they are -
that I don't see you standing
in front of me...
But I’m going to persevere,
knowing that one day,
all this brooding will turn
to laughter... And you won’t
just be a memory –
you’ll be sitting right there
on that bench next to me.

Hi Magic, it's so good that you can express your
feelings in a poem. I have seen Durham and the
university on Google, it looks such a beautiful
place, and the university looks so grand.
You have managed to capture mood here, which is
very captivating.
Thankyou for an enjoyable read.

Thank you, insert :) I'm trying to end all my poems with a positive note these days - balance out the doom and gloom an' all that!

Rebecca, I don't know how good you are at brooding but you are perfect at expressing the feeling. Once again so many good lines. The following are among my favourites:
"The best time to brood is dusk,
or early morning - that's when
the cathedral glows, quite golden,
in the dusty, orange light."
It rings a bell (no pun intended) with me as it is the same cathedral that inspired one of my earlier poems (Apostasy). I can also empathise with the guilty feeling of having a sly cigarette. I used to be a smoker myself. I hope that by now the brooding has turned to laughter.

Dear Luigi - I'm so happy you took so much from this one! And about the laughter - I'm getting there, definitely getting there ;)

You can always rely on the british weather to help the brooding along. I'm with Luigi on those lines, captures the scene for me.

Thank you, Shirley :) Yes, the weather is always a good starting point - especially this time of year, anyway!

I particularly liked the trees mourning the river's passing and the way that season and mood are at one. Made me shiver for the North, although London's just as grim at the moment (today was certainly a good one for melancholy introspection, although not for sitting on benches for too long).
