'It's time to complete your tax return...
It’s time to calculate what you earn
It’s time to tick in those boxes and read
those simple questions that shouldn’t mislead
but make you feel that you’re ever so dim,
and your eyes glaze over, and start to skim,
the meaning is lost, and your mind goes blank
and you wonder if this will soon empty the bank …'

“Earn a bit less –
less stress, distress?
get busy (not lazy)
without any pay (no way?)
or take flight abroad
to a haven to hoard
your coveted booty – until you get bored?
and to taxes and forms return
– or take on a job with ‘PayAsYouEarn’
with accountants to help with those figures and forms?”

Wrap a towel, cool your brain,
take it steadily, no strain,
step-by-step, ’til, there you are
the end-of-the-tunnel for another year.

this was fun to read and very true.to life

I did my tax return a few weeks ago, and the relief to have it over and done with is enormous. I'm never sure if I've done it right - and a few times I've rung the help line, and had some nice young person more or less do it for me over the phone.  And then last year, I had a huge surprise of a large rebate. So all these years since my husband died when I had been doing it, I had been overpaying without realising.

I remember when I had a child very young, and some information came to do with the small business that we were running, and that I owed quite a bit (not enormous, but a lot to us at the time) — I think is was to do with national insurance and running this small business. I really felt I had to 'wrap a towel' round my brain before braving the office to ask about it. I'm not sure if he was taken aback with me looking so tired and holding a little baby, but he went away and told me that it was largely their mistake, and because of that, they felt they would pass over the bit that was my mistake, or something like that.
I thought it was a lesson to me to be brave and face up to these things (with prayer, of course).! Rhiannon
