Once upon a sunrise
look up and see me fly –
too long I have waited
for its rays to give me life.
I can only stay a while
but I beg to beguile –
entreat and entrance,
with your shadow
to dance.
Sapphire studded, sparkling;
an azure streak that startles,
sweeps, swoops, and shimmers,
your mind to mesmerise.
Watch me glide,
watch me hover
where instinct
makes me
tell my wings
to take me
over culvert,
pond and river
where bull-rushes quiver;
over dappled dazzling water
there to capture your attention
as you snatch a brief reflection,
catch a glancing glimpse of gentian
as I dip and dart and dive
in spangled shards of light.
Once upon a sunrise
look up and see me shine –
once upon a moment...
once a dragonfly.

Even today whilst it pours with rain I could see it darting over the pond, and it made me smile.

Thank you, Katie. Yes, they are beautiful, aren't they? Hope the rain clears up though.

Lyrics-ABBA Parody- "The Dancing King"
He is the daancing King,
Young and beaned,
Only seventeen, Blows a day,
will keep him down
Always ripped and He's on a teeeaar
Teeeth knocked out and no one cared
So? I this going any place or is it just another dumb start?

I really enjoyed this both in content and in the crisp form, alliteration etc, words chosen with care. Thank you! Rhiannon

Thank you for reading and for taking the trouble to comment, renderedtruth.

You are obviously someone who is 'on the ball' as they say. Thank you for noticing the alliterations, and so on, Rhiannon. They can be so effective in poetry, and I am more than pleased you thought they worked here.

Agree with all the above Rigel. It's a wonderful piece with sparkle, sunshine and movement in it. I might be completely wrong here, but the last line felt a bit like when someone shouts out the answer at a quiz. A brilliant piece of writing though. Really enjoyed it.

Thank you, Parson. Pleased to hear it. And as for the last line, I guess you are right.

Right. You can stop this kind of behaviour right now Rigel! Two poems to start off - one really good and one really great. This is a super start thank you for sharing them with us.

Rigel,
You are building quite a fan club. I too really enjoyed this poem for so many reasons. I loved the alliteration which made the images memorable and I was left with a lovely rosy glow from reading it.
Keep them coming,
Moya

Came back, re-read. It's good, no doubt about it.
Rigel | June 26, 2012 - 23:18
Hi there, Denzella...or should I say, Moya, thank you. Giving someone a rosy glow is what it's all about, as far as I'm concerned.
Again, many thanks, and long may you glow.

No apologies necessary, jolono. I am always grateful when anyone takes the time to read my stuff, let alone comment, so on both counts, I thank you.
