Flowers grown to mean sorry

‘It’s like you were sent from up above’,
Unable to resist
A man who could only exist,
In dreaming hours,
He brings her flowers.
Get married and they buy a house,
She has found a perfect spouse.
He goes to work, the sun is bright
Returns among the swell of night.
Thriving in the client meetings,
Morning coffees, evening greetings.
Everything is going well,
Swell, swell,
Born baby girl,
He brings her flowers.
He loved her
but he couldn't cope,
Mechanisms rust and broke.
Unforgiving childhood,
Everything he understood.
Flicked a switch inside his head,
Dreaming hours man now dead.
The baby grew,
She knew,
Looking at him,
Went straight through.
Dreamless nights return
Dreamless pain begins to burn.
For every night he stumbles in,
She wishes that it isn't him
Throwing back the covers to clamber in.
Nightmares morning, she could tell
Sickness came, ‘what fresh hell!’
Swell, swell.
All this brings?
Alcohol and one night flings.
Born in silence,
Choking on the quiet violence.
Mother knew,
The vows taken were not true,
She tried to tell her Mum and Dad
To which they told her
‘he’s the same man you have always had’
She turned to her nearest friend,
But she dismissed her
‘Don't pretend’
Desperation now was she,
Seemingly no place to flee,
She did her best to protect her children,
At least for now he had not killed them.
He began to holiday, business trips, weekends away,
She never questioned a missing day,
But when one day he did arrive
With a bunch of flowers by his side,
She knew there was no need to worry,
For flowers had grown to mean sorry.
This hand full of garage bought delights
Signaled the end of all the fights.
She was sure,
His hiding it was pretty poor,
These flowers where the final straw,
They both knew now, this was the end,
This was it, the final bend,
As they reached the final hours
Between them stood those sorry flowers.
Flowers grown for the garage forecourt,
Bought without the slightest fore thought,
Flowers grown to mean sorry.
