Your Music

I love to listen to music. I like country and the classics. Music is a thing that can sooth the soul. So what kind of music do you like? Who are your favorite singers? Can you sing? I love to have a discussion and I hope this will be a great one.

what do you mean by the classics? Me i find my tastes change over time, at the mo well just started listening to a lot of stax like otis redding, leela james. and muse, eeles, coldplay and the like, don't know what genre they are. Always on the look out for recommendations though. But if it is loud and noisy - no thanks. norah jones always helps me write. Juliet

I mean like the classics of the beatles, elvis, Santra, Dean Martin, the guys from the 50's-70's. I'm one of the twenty kids in a school class of 156 who even listens to country. No kids listen to the classics though.

Give me the beat boys and free my soul! I wanna getta lost in ya rock n' roll and drift away. Drift away...

good taste Mike, they'll catch up with you eventually Juliet

thanks Juliet. If I was going to recomend any song for someone to listen to I'd say it would have to be "Mrs. American Pie". Probably one of the deepest, hardest to comprehend, and thought provoking songs I have ever heard.

Don McLean, and there's no "Mrs" in the title. And yes, MP - its a very good song - so good it pretty much ruined his career.

I'm from New Orleans so I'm nostalgically partial to jazz these days.

well, i guess there are a few others - just no one worth mentioning at the moment...

Liana, you're just too clever. And the mystery band is....? Anyone care to venture a guess?
What music do you want at your funeral? I quite fancy "Puff the Magic Dragon" by Peter, Paul and Mary

I want 'November Rain' by Guns n Roses.

excellent answer, bbf. i see pesky's not the only clever one on this site...not by far.
I have a real soft spot for Joy Division as well. Have never been a great fan as such (I mean somewhat obsessed) but Joy Division stayed with me for whatever reason ever since I discovered them as a miserable and utterly depressed teenager. Have moved on since then, but JD is still there. I sometimes wonder what it means... Love Portishead and Jeff Buckley as well, but can get really excited about Mazzy Star these days. I think they're absolutely brilliant (well, most of it...). What a refreshing change compared to what's constantly blaring out of the radio and TV. And it's even better that they refuse to hound everybody with relentless PR. The music speaks for itself. Good on them!
Moving into relaxation/state induction music of late I've published my first effort at download.com. It's a lucid dream induction technique and has so far been revcieved positively. In fact it held a top ten position at download.com for a month or two and has been included in the "Editors Picks" section since July last year. One particularly positive result of this publicity has led me to become involved with an international spiritualist medium in bashing out the textures to some of the audio tapes due to be bundled with his next book. There we go - the worlds of music and lit combined. I'm quite chuffed with all this!!! The free lucid dream induction mentioned above can be found at: http://music.download.com/luciddreaminductionmp3/3600-8500_32-100795586.... ...but apart from that I like Ozric Tentacles, Nick Drake and Gamelan...so ner!

There's nothing more mind-teasing than the incomprehensible eagerly avowed -

BBF - Broken face is a great call. It's a coincidence, I was just saying to Mrs. Enzo yesterday that more than anything else, the Pixies have directly inspired me to write stories. And yesterday, I was thinking that if I could write a song based on a lyric it would be based on 'There was this boy who had two children with his sisters who were his daughters who were his favourite lovers". Love it. Reminds me of Vonnegut. Love him. Also I listen to: Loads of 60s and 70s 'capital gold' stuff. Apparently I have the "...campest music taste of any straight man I've ever met", according to one friend. I'm all about the Pixies at heart though. If you put my iPod on shuffle, it could be anything, but it's likely to be the Pixies or Frank Black. Enzo.. www.thedevilbetweenus.com

Oh, and I want "That's Life" by Frank Sinatra played as they burn me at my funeral. My coffin will slide into the fire as he croons, "Curl up in a big ball and die..." Enzo.. www.thedevilbetweenus.com

Not to the extent I am but she will be [last three words said in sinister voice]. I've been doing a creative writing course, you see, and we were talking in that about inspirations and I had to say the Pixies are a massive inspiration of mine (note: even the name of my website comes from Hey...'must be a devil between us or whores in my head'). The first stab of a story I wrote on here recently, "Some Solitude for a Social Species" was partly inspired by "Grandma brought some songs from the shore" (No. 13 Baby), although ended up completely unrelated. I'd also like to do one based on the bit at the end of "I Bleed" I think song lyrics are a fantastic inspiration for writing. I've said before I'd love to write Black Diamond Bay by Dylan as a short. Hmm. Maybe I will. Enzo.. www.thedevilbetweenus.com

I think it's a travesty that FB isn't taught in schools. Sadly Mrs Enzo isn't going to make it, it's her friend's birthday so she's going to be out elsewhere. What about Mrs. Francis? You know, you could work some Pixies into your reading for me... Enzo.. www.thedevilbetweenus.com
I could listen to nothing but Nick Cave and be happy for life. Whilst at the cinema the other week I decided I wanted the Pearl and Dean tune played as my coffin goes in the the crematorium flame oven thing.

Fegal - excellent choice, maybe I'd have 20th century fox..... Yeah, the girlfriend would kill me if she knew I'd called her Mrs. Enzo. I like it though. She should be flattered. Don't tell her I said that. Please. Enzo.. www.thedevilbetweenus.com
Luckily I don't have a boyfriend to humiliate by calling him Mr Fergal. Would that count as being doubly emasculated - taking on your girlfriend's masucline pseudonym? Um...
masculine, not masu cline (Patsy's tone deaf brother)

I won't tell if you don't. What did get me in trouble once (with an ex) is when she asked, "If you had a pet name for me, what would it be?" [I never use pet names / diminutives / etc] I replied: "Orifice". It was a joke. Well, I found it funny, anyway. Enzo.. www.thedevilbetweenus.com

Ha ha...Sadly, I've never had a posh girlfriend to make fun of. Mrs. Enzo goes to kickboxing and kung fu...maybe I should start calling her Bruce Lee or something. That'll go down well, I'm sure. And they say women are hard to understand! Nonsense! We should start giving lessons, BBF. Enzo.. www.thedevilbetweenus.com
I I were to call my love (I don't have one, but I may have found my first) Ms. Pyro, I doubt she'd be pleased. Anyway, thanks to all who have posted and to any who continue to post. By the way, I doubt I shall have many more compliments of, writing above my age. 15 is so much more commanding than 14. It's my birthday! YAY!! (Well it is in America) :) "You're the nicest guy I know Charlie." "I'm sorry to hear that Pete."

Many happy returns, sir! Hope you have fun and get great presents and all that good stuff. Enjoy! Enzo.. www.thedevilbetweenus.com
Happy Birthday, Mike! (Is it still your birthday? Which way does the time difference go... I forget... It's my age.)
Happy birthday. Mine's coming up soon - I'll be 53. 'Let's Make the Water Turn Black' by Frank Zappa will play as I hit the eternal flames. It ends with ...'Wait 'till the fire turns green....' Mark's a Pixies man - you can debate them endlessly on Thursday night. Right now, of the living, I like the Dandy Warhols best.
Yeah 15. Sounds so much different. Now I guess I better grow up (like that'll ever happen) :) Thanks everyone

I love PJ Harvey Fortet Sigor Ros Belle and Sebastian Yeah Yeah Yeahs Fiona Apple The Ordinary Boys Jeff Buckley Bob Dylan Bright Eyes The Doves The Smiths I can sing. But, I am learning that there is no point in being able to do so if you are a crap performer! You either born with it or you aint. Span
Yo - good lists. A grand medieval-style flourish of the hat to Leftboy and Hannah's lists. I shall steal some from both... The Smiths Bjork Aphex Twin Squarepusher NoFX Belle and Sebastian Rocket from the Crypt Bright Eyes The Doves The Beatles Morrissey Luke Vibert Plaid Jamie Lidell Dangermouse and Jemini Kate Bush Radiohead The Postal Service Sean Paul, yes, Sean Paul And I love a really good pop song: Beyonce Crazy in Love, Justin Timberlake (the one with Pharrell shouting "oh!") and Britney Toxic. C'mon people, who's with me??? Joe
This week I have mostly been listening to: Grant Lee Buffalo Townes Van Zandt Goldfrap My Chemical Romance The Polyphonic Spree I hate American Pie with a vengance, all the worst people from the sixth form used to congrugate in the Mill and sing along with it on the jukebox, we always had to go in a some point in the night to grab the good ones and persuade them back to the Wagon where they had a much better jukebox that had Iggy Pop on it. Everytime I hear that song I flash back to being trapped in a pub surrounded by drunken idiots I didn't like and who didn't like me all singing at the top of their tuneless voices.

I think my least favorite song is brown eyed girl by van morrison. i spent most nights in college working behind a bar (and the few i had off were spent in front of it...) and everytime this song played, about a dozen spins a night, all the guys sitting at the bar would sing it to whichever girl was sitting with them, SUBSTITUTING her eye color in the chorus...i'm cringing just thinking about it - and it was a long, long time ago...
Yuk - I hate both American Pie and Brown Eyed Girl with so much passion. Instant bile production.
Me! Me! I'm with you spack...can't beat a bit of Britney. And the Snoop Dogg song with JT and the video set in the casino. Am currently loving country music. Alison Krauss especially. And I saw Belle and Sebastian on Top of the Pops a week or so ago rhyming 'poet' with 'funny little frog in my thro-it'. And I thought I couldn't love them any more if I tried...
Ah lib, yes I much agree. I also with the celebration of cheesy pop! In fact, I happen to know that I have danced with both yourself and Spack to said 'Britney esque' music. It was muchos fun and should happen again soon. In faaaact, going out tomorrow night. fancy a dance my wee friend? You know you like it. Span x
Ooh, where are you going? Let's go somewhere really 'cool' and get the DJ to play 'Toxic'. And watch the girls who all look like Meg White or Karen O and the boys who look like any member of The Strokes DEAL WITH IT. Lx

Spack - thanks for using the word "yo" - a word that originated right here in philly. you really know how to make a guy feel at home...(unless it was a typo).
Freaks. Here's my list of the ultra-hip bands I'm listening to. Kick your pop habit, you consumerist crack-whores, and tune into Tim's Kool Choonz FM. I'm currently listening to: The Raped Dollars Rampant Daryl Pogo Switchblade Fight (formerly The Owls) Momentary Prolapse Figbar Teeny Sodd The Knockers Chess Sex Underdeveloped How Much For The Fish MC EZ PZ The Toss Cops My Mulatto Lovechild The Rankles Teenage Pornfire Liquid Dick Ninja In A Birthday Cake My playlist changes all the time, but they're all awesome.
Yo! Yo! And yo! This one goes out to F to the Oster... izzle. Let's have a trendy-undergound-band-a-thon. I liked the following bands before they sold out/went shit/ released their second home recorded demo tape: Pish Mario-san Shaped like Nicaragua F to the F Very better person Sing up, my pretties Halo for a frisbee Askance The 'spinning outta control' crew featuring DJ 4 x 4 Check ma skin Poised for hummus Stringent de-boost But, like I said, only the early stuff... Joe
And Tim, there is actually a band called The Owls. They're pretty good.
16 songs I have been listening to recently ( a virtual C90's worth, if you will, with a hand drawn and lettered inlay) Street Hassle - Lou Reed Upon This Tidal Wave of Young Blood - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah Andrew Ridgley - Black Box Recorder Dream Operator - Talking Heads After Murder Park - The Auteurs The Medium Is Tedium - Desperate Bicycles I Feel Love - Donna Summer San Antonio Foam Party - Half Man Half Biscuit God Made The Virus - McCarthy Felicity - Orange Juice Taste - Ride Rent - Pet Shop Boys Land's End - Patrick Wolf The Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack - The Nice Push The Button - Sugababes The Number One Song In Heaven - Sparks Cheers, Mark Brown, Editor (on leave), www.ABCTales.com

Discovered this a few days ago: http://www.bassnectar.net/ Not something I would have listened to normally and yet I love it. www.pandora.com is wonderful. Anyone has any pandora radio stations they would like to share?
And Lib, apparently we have danced together but I know not who you are. Hi! Thanks for being with me on the Britney front. I thought I was alone in a sad world where it's not cool to try and bust some Justinesque body popping moves on any dancefloor, during any song. Joe
Oh, and I almost forgot - a few bands from the Boston scene that aren't quite so well-known: Gran's Canyon The Forgotten Lapis Lazuli Nightshades I'm Turning Into Dave's Butt Death By F**k Meatshock My brother made me a compilation CD of some of their stuff. 'Guess My Length' by Meatshock is a total showstopper. And Spack - what do you mean 'there is actually a band called The Owls'. I *know* there is - but you haven't heard of them. You've probably got them confused with Oasis, who're your favourite band ever and you love them. Plus, Mario-san and F to the F are all right, but Shaped Like Nicaragua? Dude, they were like the death rattle of Marty 'Palsy' Walsy's musical career. He did all his best stuff when he was drumming for the Gay Hipolites.
Various Production. They very good. Mark Brown, I think Clap your Hands and Say Yeah are most good. There will always be pop Rokkit. Eat it. Span
Marty Palsy Walsy is a legend, everytime he uses that cryongenically frozen baby arm instead of a drumstick, he makes pure musical gold. Let's cut the mainstream Boston scene crap and actually hear about some bands who aren't on heavy rotation with shit-by-numbers FM. Check these out. All these bands formed on the 8.45am Gare Du Nord direct train to Lyon. Anal Luge Tin Cannes Count Love-Rot and the Spider Mimicry Refuse as in trash Pincile spinode manufacturing sub-conference Aaaah! Uh. English Plane Dis be da shiz-nit. Jose Malaria Pill D
