Creative Prostitution

I'm trying to think of some alternative ways of making money from my writing 'talent' - so far I've come up with...

Offering my skills as a freelance proofreader.
Asking companies (such as Kellogs, PG Tips, etc) if they want to buy some of my stories to market their products.

Any other suggestions?

You could always try begging letters. Buy my book, visit my blog: http://whatisthisstrangeplace.blogspot.com/
I'm working on that one - it's called an Arts Council grant! :-) * P * :-)

If you lived in a non-English speaking country you could find lots of work as a proofreader. In the UK it will be much more difficult. Try contacting foreign companies with offices in the UK. Their local staff might not be native English speakers. There are also proofreading firms who might take you on as a freelancer.
greetings card verse. small firms advertising.

Try female products adverts: Larry and Mick wear wings whilst eating cornflakes on a trampoline. I'd imagine that would go down well.

except that adverts are very short and there wouldn't be time be all the repetetive dialogue: 'Wings?' asked Larry. 'Wings, indeed, friend Larry,' said Mick. ad infinitum

Some genuinely good ideas there! Justyn: didn't think of that proofreading possibility - will investigate. Writing verse for cards - one of those things which comes up frequently, but is quickly forgotten - I'll put it on my list! Re Larry & Micks: obvious though it would seem, I've not actually considered tailor-writing stories for specific markets. Except for the PG Tips one. Might just give that a go... Yan: when you say "small firms advertising," what do you mean exactly? Do you mean looking out for adverts or advertising myself to small firms... or something else? I must admit, I expected primariliy silliness in response to this question... which is fine... but thanks for the semi-serious answers - & keep them coming! :-) * P * :-)

I meant offering your creative services to small firms who don't have (can't afford) dedicated advertising/marketing depts. Ever seen the crap that an all singing all dancing MD churns out? Might be brains in the cut throat but all that number crunching and scheming has left him with a creative droop. Similar to the tv idea but less ambitious, although not necessarily less profitable....or something like that.

You could also try ghostwriting speeches and articles for executives. A friend of mine in the US has been doing that for years and making well over $100k/yr for her efforts. You could also try writing/editing CVs. Extremely tedious work, but people can make a good living doing that. You'll have to educate yourself about CVs, though. You can't just jump in with no knowledge of the conventions.
