Writer donations

Hi, just a thought, at the moment I'm broke, I have no job and I'm waiting to start Uni in september, all I have is my music, my art and my writing, I live in a caravan and pretty soon I will be evicted from the plot of land I'm staying on. I'm gonna cut to the chase, has it been considered by the admins of ABCtales to put individual donation buttons for the writers and not just one for the site, this would be based on generousity and not by force, maybe a voluntary donation button could be put on the bottom of pieces of writing, if someone likes what they read and they happen to be fairly well off with plenty to spare maybe they could donate a small amount to a desperate writer. Can we have some opinions on this?

Well, I'd like to know which admins these were, for one thing. Does Tony Cook know anything about this? I hope so, since he owns the site.
What do you mean? I'm asking if it would be considered. I don't know if they have already discussed it, Im trying to find out.

sorry to hear about your troubles, I'm not sure if ABC would allow it, perhaps such a button could be placed on your own personal page rather than on each piece of writing, Otherwise you could set up your own blog or Tumblr page where you can be in control of what goes on your page. I've seen plenty of Tumblrs dedicated to writing that have donation buttons, I can show you some examples if you want to see some.

Don't be sorry, they not troubles, its just circumstance, thanks for caring all the same, I don't know what tumblr's are but if you could show me how I would go about setting something like a donation button up then, yes please, not sure if any one ever would donate but atleast the option is there. My only difficulty is being skint, I'm happy to be skint, but its nice to have some money now and then, I seen the ABC donate button and thought maybe a personal one would be a good idea, incase some generous soul ever decided a piece of writing was worth a few bob.

It's certainly worth considering - but I must tell you that although we completely rely on donations they are not that forthcoming. Some people are incredibly generous - and without them ABCtales would not survive, but the vast majority of members never give anything at all. I think that's sad but I don't moan on about it or try and chivvy up those who don't give. Many may well be in the same situation as you and I don't expect donations from people who are in dire straits. Will - it may well be worthwhile to do as you suggest but I also worry about it becoming a 'begging' opportunity - and I'm not suggesting that that is your notion. It'll go on the 'think about' pile!

Sort of like buskinng your writing out, yeah I can see where your coming from with the begging, especially with my original post, afterwards I looked at it and had a little think and realised the way I went about, like a typical street urchin, first reveal bits about yourself to create some sympathy then hit them with the question. My bad. But still an idea worth considering. Thank you all for contributing,

Well, the spectrum of people unable to earn a living from writing includes all but two or three of the 16,000+ members of ABCtales.com and extends to the poet laureate and a significant % of the UK's award-winning novelists. This is not belittle Will's situation but to suggest that donations on the basis of being an aspiring writer are probably not the most likely way of solving it. That said, should anyone want to make a donation to an ABCtales writer, it's fairly easy to find ways of sorting it out online without ABCtales needing to get directly involved in putting up a button.

I do have sympathy for Will's plight (and for Tony's, keeping this site going on minimal funds)but as bukharin says, most writers are broke. If you're going to write full time you're probably going to be skint for most of your life , and if you're going to do other employment as well you have to accept the frustrations that brings. Maggy's ideas sound good, or you can compromise your artistic integrity and write crap for money. I have employment and write crap. Still skint.
Great news for you Larkin - congratulations! I hope you enjoy your new job - as that's another whole ball game!
Hello Will, I'll send you an email with some info.

new Larkin-Williamson Well done, good luck with your new job.Hope all goes well for you.As someone said to me in situations, don't give up. julie x
It sgood you say 'not troubles just circumstance' you have a good way not mind being skint, yukno I cld use a busking skill of it too, except there are so many better writers get hundereds of reads on each post I dont think I wld get notice. All I do art, write & music don't make money either :/
