Perpetual Writing Contest

hello!

a new website is seeking stories for a new type of contest. essentially, you write a story, have people to vote for it, and if you receive the most votes at payout time, you win the payout.

right now payouts are $100 US, but the aim of the site is to award over $12,000 per month.

take a look and let me know what you think!

This is a good idea and I think bound for success. Like all great ideas simply executed and with a clear message. Somewhere, sometime ago I was hoping that ABC would evolve along these lines.. making it easy for many to tangiblly support the exceptional few who bring real value... It is not too late... this sort of interactivity is where the web is going!
Sounds highly prone to rigging to me. And I fear the prospect of seeing cash sums paid out for crap stories voted for by idiots.
Where the heck do they get the money from?? How does this payout meter go up. I can't find anything on the site explaining that. I mean, if ABC could earn themselves £50 extra a month, I'd rather they spent it on events and things rather than payouts to individual authors.
All I can find is :- "Income is generated from a number of sources, including website traffic." and "Revenue comes from a number of sources, who have asked to remain anonymous." "At this time, donations are not being accepted. This may change in the future. Right now it is important to emphasize that no money is required to write a story, vote or receive payouts."
Could be a crafty plan by statisticians, advertisers or simply publishers to cheaply find out what sort of things are popular :O)
Money! :)

Give me the beat boys and free my soul! I wanna getta lost in ya rock n' roll and drift away. Drift away...

Ooh, what cynicism! Admittedly I haven't checked out the site yet, but I think it is conceptually a good idea. Money is a good incentive for writing well! And as for Jack's... I fear the prospect of seeing cash sums paid out for crap stories voted for by idiots. ... I am personally generally of the opinion that widely liked = well communicated = quality. I am sure there are many who disagree, but what other reliable criteria do we have for assessing the quality of writing or art in general? :-) * P * :-)

The All New Pepsoid the Second!

well yes, our brains, but the collective brains of the consumers, rather than one or a few supposedly 'elite' brains who believe their opinion on art is supreme. Art is communication, so if you've communicated well and lots of people 'vote' in your favour, then you have succeeded, which could be said to imply quality. But then that's only my opinion... :-) * P * :-)

The All New Pepsoid the Second!

Anyway, I'm sure we've had this discussion somewhere before. In the words of a man by the name of Gump... And that's all I have to say on that. :-) * P * :-)
