Quality of Life
I love every moment I'm alive
In the car I suck a mint and dance to a good song.
The just rained on air freshly laundered
School run cars are loaded with
book bags, dogs, and homework
"Do you have your mouthguard?" Mothers ask.
Young turks in smart cars are off to conquer, make the sale
Girls with bags full of make up, heads full of boys
and last nights wine, drive through fog
In the morning my cat watches for signs of waking
come on come on stroke me
so small so patient
In the supermarket choosing fruit or peppers
the bloom ,the smell, the taut smooth skins
An old couple walks slowly with careful list
They are older of course than I shall ever be
but I can wait
Picking up a toy dropped from a trolley
Sharing a joke at the till
Letting someone out first in the carpark,
I love the library, history, art, shelves full of possibilities
slightly dusty, smelling of use,
Children looking at books, au-pairs on computers
emailing friends.
It's not the big things
it's the small
I love being alive
everyone should live like this
