Road Trip

I met the love of my life
in a greyhound bus depot.
We were travelers
keen to hit the open road,
feel the wind in our faces
and the dust in our eyes.
I asked her where she was going.
She said she was following the wind.
We took the bus from Buffalo to Chicago,
hitched a lift to Kansas City.
We slept on cramped seats
that made our butts ache.
I kissed her over stale coffee
in a roadside diner.
We hired a car and drove,
straight as the wind took us.
Stopping in roadside motels,
making love till the sun came up.
We were married
in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
We drove around the country
for three months non-stop.
When the wind died down
we settled too.
We made a home in Atlanta
raised two wonderful kids.
Finding nice, sensible jobs
enjoying the "normal" life.
But every now and again
the wind will take us.
We'll pack the kids off to friends
and hit the open road.
With the wind in our faces,
dust in our eyes.
And make love
till the sun comes up.
