Roses Hovered Above Us

Roses floated in the air. Pink and unravelling they hung for too long. Frozen, for more time than was possible.
Things slowed down. The roses swayed. Sara stood infront of me.
“If you touch me, I won't be able to do it.” she said. “I won't be able to do it and I have to.”
I laughed, affectionate, to hide my anger. To keep her close.
“Why do you bring me to beautiful places to break my heart. You make things filmic so I'll never forget.”
Sara just smiled sadly and turned away, already headed for better things.
I let out a scream. A low, growling shout to let her know this wasn't just her scene. I could change things too.
I clawed at the roses, dragging them down from where they floated stupidly, pulling a bunch of them together. Thorns dug into me and I grinned.
Sara looked at me. Sad smile gone. Too much eyewhite on show. This shot would never make the final cut.
I threw the flowers at her feet.
What I wanted to do was hold onto her wrists and pin her down. To wrap those wrists in thorned stems and scream for her to stay. Like a psycho, like a madman, like somebody terrifying because they have nothing to lose.
I wanted my face to hover over hers, like the roses hovered over us, indifferent and unexplained.
The flowers landed, limp, and she looked down at them. Looked at me. She left the scene, elegantly. Stole from me again.
The roses stopped floating when she had gone. They just hung, ordinary, at the end of thorned stems.
I lay down on my back. Looked up, squinted. I tried to make the flowers hang again, impossibly, above my head.
