MoonUnit
Total Submersion
Selbie cursed silently under her breath and made a mental note to herself never to come downtown when MoonUnit released a new album. MoonUnit were a rock indie band who in the past year had become the most famous band on this side of the northern hemisphere. Already, they had taken the UK by storm and had their eyes set on conquering the US. Not that Selbie was a fan or anything, she just watched the news.
Herds of people - girls mainly - were crowding the street, pushing and shoving to get into the tiny record shop. The screams and shouts of crazed fans went straight through Selbie’s head and made it pound. Getting through this unruly stampede without being injured or trampled on was going to be tougher than she had anticipated; after 10 minutes furious elbowing Selbie decided to give up fighting and allow the surging current of people to carry her into the record shop. Two flustered looking till attendants seemed to be having as much trouble as she was. Selbie managed to throw one of them a please-save-me look before being squashed against an empty CD rack.
Selbie Robinson, Grove Park School’s top student, currently facing pulverisation in a downtown city record shop pondered if this was a sign of things to come.
Call of the Wild
"What happened? You look like you been pulled through a bush backwards!" Freddie Thomas sighed looking his considerably dishevelled best friend up and down.Freddie Thomas was Selbie’s next door neighbour. A slightly eccentric boy with a mop of untidy ginger hair, a sloping walk and a pixie like smile. Freddie had been Selbie’s best friend for the best and worse part of ten years. And he would never let her forget it.
"Don’t you dare sigh at me Freddie!" Selbie shouted, her arms waving wildly like a windmill in a hurricane "It was you who asked me to come downtown therefore this is your fault" she paused, "Why AM I even here?". Freddie grinned suspiciously, his braces flashing in the dull orange light of the lamp posts. "Gotta surprise for ya" he winked, tapping his nose with one long finger.
Selbie - who had begun to angrily stomp away - stopped. A wave of curiosity mingled with apprehension trickled down her spine; she shivered. Last time Freddie had a "surprise" for her they had ended up in the bread clogged duck pond in park. Not something Selbie particularly wanted to remember, even if it had been fun. Freddie had a seriously warped idea of a good time. "What is it Freddie? If it’s anything to do with duck ponds or bread or...whatever! I swear I’m leaving right
now!"
"Chill Selb" Freddie grinned, leaning casually against a lamppost and putting on an awful American accent, "It’s something cool, ya do know what cool is, right Selbie?" Selbie aimed a soft punch at his stupid snub nose, but he dodged. "Anyway doll, no time for chit chat our bus leaves in…" Freddie checked his watch, “HOLY CRAP TWO MINUTES!” Selbie didn’t even have time to protest as he dragged her by the hand towards the bus station.
It was going to be a long, long night.
