Because of what he said

Because of what he said
Because of what he said
I let my hate grow
Nourished it with hurt
Deep in my heart
While outwardly I smiled
Fanned the flame with displaced air
From the hits my hands ached to make
Burnished, tarnished once-sweet things
Until they crumbled
Scorched caramel dust.
Because he tried to make things better
Resentment coiled in my stomach
Subtle sensual snaking
And it undulated upwards, escaped
When guilt twisted my insides, and
Hissed sugared poison in my ear.
It felt so good to feel so bad
My hatred fuelled my hate
Self-perpetuating
Inextinguished fury
Let it make paper-grey rain
The bitter ashes of you.
