the principal of one lost shoe
i have lost
a good many things in my time:
a key,
money,
good friends,
a brown leather jacket,
more money,
poems on scraps of paper like this one,
bad friends,
the odd beautiful girl,
my nerve,
people in my family that made me smile,
a badge,
my virginity,
more money (and the two aren’t connected),
five cats (separately),
my confidence,
some books,
a copy of Bleach by Nirvana on white vinyl,
other records,
my patience,
the plot (many times),
my way,
a key,
money,
i am yet to lose a shoe.
but i notice
that other people do.
one at a time, they seem to.
the world must contain
a great many
cold toes,
worn socks,
and one-shoed hoppers
and hopers.

This made me laugh, possibly

This made me laugh, possibly because I too have never lost a shoe.
It reminded me of a village I drive through which had a pair of shoes slung over a power cable over the road for about three years.
There's something about seeing strange objects in places you don't expect which lends itself well to whimsical poetry, trolleys in the river, a school bag left in the park, things like that.
I may have to write about the shoes now...
