The Winters Heart
Old and Lifeless
Like leaves caught in autumnal winds jostling and violent their fall
Mighty trees releasing and abandoning their skin that was once a beacon of life
Canopies that gave shade in sweltering heat
For leaves without them there would be no life
As she slowly discards the fossils of time
A beautiful rainbow of colour is all that remains of the autumn
As the winter takes her toll
The leaves fade as reminders of seasons and memories that pass
With the autumn colours the last bastions of beauty
The winter leaves nothing but skeletal remains
As we all enter a new time where cold settles upon the decay left behind
As she covers all around her in a blanket of new
Where hibernators battle in silence that their harvest tides them through
To the spring where life awakens
In a bloom of colour
That covers the world once enveloped in white
Spring flowers emerge as the winters passing
Like an old friend so sad to see her leave
She has fought us hard
And taught us well
To be prepared for her anger can kill
With the melting of her heart she leaves us the gift of life
Although I will miss her
I know it won't be long before she returns to wrap me in her blanket of cold that feels so warm
The winters heart is where this old man belongs
Just like her time here passing so briefly
I know my time will end too soon.
