I will not help you with your magic trick.
No I won’t wave my arms in the air.
I’m not going to take the hands of those either side of me
I will make this painful for everyone.
Pick someone else. Don’t look at me
I will run, I will bite, I will scratch, I will hide.
I’m not one of those front row guys
can’t you tell by the way I’m staring at the floor.
I will not pick a card any card.
I will not sing along with the chorus
I will not shout out the name of a film genre
I don’t care if it’s integral to your act.
Maybe it’s bad experiences with pantomime dames
but I would rather be wrongly picked out of a line-up
‘That’s the murderer! I saw him do it!
He’s the guy with all the rope in his car!’
Sometimes I wonder if I should put my hand up.
Maybe I need to learn that when they put swords
through a volunteer from the audience
there probably won’t be blood.

This is excellent! You could
This is excellent! You could be talking about me -(along with many others). My favourite line is -
'I would rather be wrongly picked out of a line-up'. And everything is there - clever how you got it all in. Scary and funny.
Love it.

A gripping statement of
A gripping statement of defiance to stand firmly for what we believe to be the truth. It's a shame that suspicion can only be alluded to in this world primed for disaster but the truth will come out in the wash once they've put us through the wringer, not that it will make a blind bit of difference. Good job.

i might have wrongly applied
i might have wrongly applied a level of self-transferrance onto this but i took anxiety from it as much as other possibilities. it made me think of not contributing to conversations etc in lines like maybe I need to learn that when they put swords through a volunteer from the audience there probably won’t be blood. anyway possibilites; a wonderful poem and wonderful writing. :-)
