Capitalism is an unplanned economy as George Orwell once stated. Capitalism is based on "enlightened" self-interest.
Liberal economic theorists like Paul Krugman pretend that capitalism is a planned economy. This is very untrue. He is wrong at the very core of his arguments.
Now, it is very true that the Silicon Valley revolution has saved the American economy. At the same time, many of the corporations are culturally-driven corporations.
It is also true that European economy is also driven culturally.
It is also true that even in the old days, capitalists helped define culture or to spot new trends in culture and to capitalize on it.
Good capitalists adopted the idea of individuality from artists and political leaders. They were outside of society in one sense. They were creating a social product or service that provided a value to the consumer.
Once again now, capitalists are "in-between" three cultures, the culture of the Millenials, the culture of the Babyboomers, and the culture in the middle.
