The Devil's Mistress

The Devil is not a red-horned, fork-tongued demon.
He does not spit fire from the darkness of your closet,
nor does he hold you against your will,
dragging your heart from all that is holy.
We have given far too much credit to The Devil.
Truly, he is as magnificent and dazzling
as one would expect of a fallen angel,
but people cannot be led away form what they truly want.
He does not hide under beds;
he lives between your sheets
waiting for you to get lonely at three in the morning,
so he can comfort you with promises he can’t keep.
He will say anything to make you stay,
and he will mean every word
because he is just as lonely and
desperate as the rest of us.
Falling for him won’t hurt too badly.
You will go so far as to call him a hero, even when he assures you he is not.
You will tell him that maybe villains can be heroes, too.
These are your exact words;
you will have nothing to blame him for.
You will walk into The Devil’s arms of your own free will,
and when your heart is left burning to ashes
he will give you his throne.
